Purser of the Alliance Will Suc
ceed L W. Shaw in Marsh
field Soon.
PORTLAND, Ore., May 5. H. W.
Skinner, purser on the steamer Al
liance, has been appointed agent for
the California & Oregon Coast Steam
ship Company, owner of the craft, at
Coos Bay, with headquarters at
Marshfield. It is a decided promo
tion, tho agency carrying a much
larger salary. He will be succeeded
on the Alliance by E. L. Brown, who
arrived from San Francisco yester
day to fill tho vacancy, Mr. Brown is
one of the best known pursers on
the Pacific Coast. For the past threo
years ho has been on the steamer
Newport, belonging to tho Pacific
Mail, and plying between tho Bay
City and Panama.

" "uu ou Ulal roul0' says Mr-
1 BrOWn. "I WHS In n nnsttlnn In Irnon
in pretty close touch with the canal
operations. The work is going ahead
at a much livelier rate than the gen
eral public appears to bo aware of.
I will venture the prediction that
within two years the excavation work
will be'completed and in six years
and six months ships will be running
through the big waterway. It is sel
dom that I made a trip down thero
in the past three years that I did
not make a tour of inspection over
tho line, and I think I am in a posi
tion to judge of about when the job
will be concluded."
TAKE CHARGE SOON.
Mr
Skinner to Assume New Duties
Within Few Days.
Purser Skinner came down on hla
regular run on the Alliance yester
day from Portland and was gratified
at the promotion given him by tho
company. Owing to the necessity ot
"breaking in" his successor as pur
ser on the Alliance, he will not bo
able to take up his duties as'agent
here for about ten days, possibly
Until then, Tom James of North
Bend, will be acting agent In Marsh
field, relieving Mr. Shaw who was
desirous of getting away from the of
fice today.
Estus. Mr. Estus is the stepfather
of the little Holmes girl who is tho
victim of the disease. They reside
near the bridge leading to West
Marshfield.
Cuts Hand Severely. Chas. Fox,
an engineer on a Coos River boat,
cut his hand severely while chopping
wood on the craft as he was going
up stream last evening. The ax
struck slightly below tho wrist, sev
ering three arteries. The boat was
turned and the Injured man brought
back to Marshfield where the wound
was dressed by Dr. Mlngus. Whllo
the Injury Is severe and Fox wa3
weakened by the loss of blood, it is
not believed that there will bo any
serious developments.
"REX HUH" AT THE CRYSTAL).
All records for attendance nt tho
Crystal theatre were broken last
night at the initial performances of
both performances. The story of
"Ben Hur" is too well-known by tho
American public to need any expla
nation hero and this moving plcturo
production tells the main events ot
the story in a very realistic manner.
Tho costumes are beautiful and ap
propriate, the dramatic effects sup
erb and the scenory true to the timo
in which the events took place. The
chariot race at tho end is a fitting
climax for so great a film.
Tho balance of tho program was
up to tho usual standard.
The Days of 'CI, a story of Civil
War times, deserves special mention.
Mr. Will Lynch in tho illustrated
tenor solo, "With You In Eternity,"
received enthusiastic applause.
