None of Them Can Answer
Question That is Puzzling
Congressmen But Declare
That There is a Profit in
Raising Poultry Some of
the Views.
WASHINGTON, April 24. Over
shadowing in importance any other
feature of the lion house Inquiry is
the firm refusal of Mrs. Hen to bo
smoked out from behind tho dollar
mark. Serenely indifferent to the
searching investigation of her finan
cial affairs, now being conducted by
congress and tho country at largo,
the sixth day of tho struggle finds
her still on the job cackling contend-
n.
That she is master of tho situation
Is admitted by those who have under
taken the task of proving that she is
living far beyond her means; that
she is Irresponsible; that her annual
output docs not warrant tho enor
mous increase in the cost of keeping
her and that by reason of her loose
methods of bookkeeping sho is set
ting a bad example for the next gen
eration of liens.
In the face of tills terrible Indict
ment, conviction upon which means
the surrendering of her proud social
and business position to tho well
hehaved, straight laced and econo
mical Incubator, the ruler of the
roost and the queen of tho quick
lunchery maintains a four-ply silence
that worries her friends.
Editorial Advice.
Up New England way the natives
are choking tho letter boxes with in
formation on the subject, most of
uhlcb. has found its way to, this of
fice. The lien editor appreciates the
kindness of tho subscriber in Top
Lnot, Mass., who enclosed a fresh
egg in his communication as proof of
tie sterling character of his feather
ed employees. The fact that said
egg was badly scattered when it
reached the editor does not lessen
the obligation ho feels, but if this
ejatom is to become popular It would
be well to fry the eggs before placing
them in the envelope.
Ana now to put New England on
record:
PANCAKE, Vt., April 25. "I
don't know why this investigation
as started at a time when every hen
n the country is doing her level best
to keep up with tho Easter demand,"
shouted Jabez Juniper. "For all I
can see it is giving a whole lot of
folks a chance to work off a surplus
sputter. And some of them wouldn't

Note. Suburbanites will bo pleas
ed to hear that the Department of
Agriculture is still agitated over the
yearly expense of keeping-a hen.
How much it costs to keep a hen,
In dollars and in cents,
I do not know, but otherwise
It simply is immense.
She's such a busy, active thing
And wrecks more garden soil
In half an hour than one can fix
In days and days of toil.
Sho doesn't seem to bother much
About her mortal needs
Until tile flower-beds are done,
And then she swipes the seeds.
She's neighborly as sho can be,
And when her larder's poor,
She climbs the high dividing fence
And helps herself next door.
She roams around the livelong day,
As cheerful as can be,
And plays tho very dickens with
All growing property.
She seems to think she has a right
to every little bit
That she can see, and what she can't
She goes and digs for it.
Oh, say!
What does a hen cost every year?
To calculate Is vain,
For figures cannot measure half
Her ownor's mental strain.
W. J. LAMPTON.
The question that is now absorb
ing the Interests of Congress and
poultry raisers in the East "What
does it cost to keep a hen a year?"
is arousing considerable interest
among Coos Bay people who have
raised chickens, are raising chickens
or who expect to raise chickens.
There is a wide divergence of opin
ion and each ono Insi ts that he is
right and in the several discussions
that started around town this morn
ing, the debaters were lamenting the
fact that they couldn't find some ac
curate figures somp place to decide
uio matter.
"I have fourteen heii3 and ono
rooster and they eat about 100
pounds of wheat a month," said Tom
Rook, tho city hall superintendent.
"What other feed they require and
tho cost of lt, I don't know. How
ever, I know that It pays to keep
hens and then there Is the satisfac
tion of having fresh eggs. One time,
I keep tab on my chickens for about
three years. During that time, I
had from a dozen to three dozen. I
allowed tho current price for okks
regardless whether we ate them or
sold them and also the price of each
chicken -we killed. At tho end of
tho three years, I found that we had
$150 profit on our chickens. How
ever, I don't know exactly how much
lt costs to keep a hen a year."
"I don't know what It costs to
keep a hen a year but I know I wish
that I could raise poultry and have
iresh eggs when I want them," re
marked City Engineer Sandberg.
"I heard a man say that It costs
fifty cents a month to keep a hen.
However, you needn't quoto me as
an authority. You can quote mo on
city Improvements."
"I don t know what it costs to
keep a hen a year but I know lt is
a lot of bother to fix them up like
this," remarked Frank Parsons, tho
druggist, as ho put tho finishing
touches to a very pretty window dis
play of a Bantam family a rooster,
a hen and several chicks. "It is a
lead pipe cinch that I won't keep
them in that window a year to find
out, olther. I suppose hens are like
people, though tho cose of keeping
them depends on the hen."
"I don't know anythinn about the
cost of keeping a hen a year," said
Dr. E. E. Straw, tho mayor of
Marshfield. "I don't believe that
tho medical expenses would be great,
though."
"I haven't any idea what lt would
cost to keep a hen a year," remarked
Jay Mahonoy. "However, I know
that you can sit down and figure
that a man can become a millionaire
ln a few years by raising chickens.
Starting with two hens and allow
ing for the natural increase in the
flock, it will bo only a short time,
according to your figures, until there
are millions and millions of off
springs of tho two hens."
"I don't know what it costs to
keep a lion a year even if I always
have chickens," remarked Tom Hall
this morning. "It all depends on
the l;ind of chickens you keep, I
presume. I have fourteen hens and
we get more than enough eggs from
them to supply my family of four.
Last year, my little girl sold about
$8 worth of eggs that wo couldn't
use in the house. My hens are good
ones, though. One day when we
were only keeping twelve hens we
got seventeen eggs for tho day's
products of the chickens."
May Have Succeeded at Home.
A physician went rabbit shooting and
returned, tired out and empty handed,
telling his wife ho hndn't killed a
thing. Thereupon she remarked: "I
told you so. If you had stayed at
homo and attended to your legitimate
business, you might have been more
successful."
