osed local option election, is on

MRS. J. S. COKE entertained twenty
ladles at her home the other after
noon. The home was prettily Ido
corated In Japanese fashion and a
very enjoyable afternoon was
spent.

money In the flve-furlong dash on
the Emeryville tracks last week, de

for the $500 purse. Mr. Hume, who
is on Coos Bay, Is jubilant over the
event as It marked his first winning
of the season on tho California
courses. Morwood ran in the Curry
county races last year. He covered
the five furlongs in 23 and two-fifth
seconds.

New Motor Boat. The Bevier En
gine Works of North Bend, is con
structing a new motor boat that Is
attracting considerable attention. It
Is of the White Steamer type, fifty
feet long, nine and one-half feet
beam and has twin screws. It will
be completed In about a month. It
will be an oil burner.
BERT TAYLOR, ono of the pitchers
of the Marshfield baseball team,
will leave In the morning for
Portland on business. It Is barely
possible that he will remain there.
However, If baseball prospects
brighten up a bit, Manager Char
les Howard will endeavor to ar
range to have him return.
F. J. WADE, a well-known Scotts
burg merchant, Is on Coos Bay on
business. Ho says that everything
Is prosperous In that vicinity. As
yet, he says no work on has been
started on tho construction of tho
Drain-Coos Bay railway although
everyone In that section Is expect
ing to see some signs of activity
soon.
MISS A. E. CANNON, the efficient
bookkeeper of the Pettyjohn &
Nichols Company, will leave to
morrow for an extended visit at
the home of her parents in Salem,
Ore. She expects to remain until
about Juno 1st. During her ab
