BANDON TURNS
DOWN CHARTER
Proposition to Extend City Lim
its and Enlarge Council's
Powers Rejected.
By a vote of 100 against the char
ter to 92 in favor of It the people
of Bandon rejected tho proposed new
cuarter for Bandon at tho polls. Tho
draft of tho charter having been
more than a year In preparation and
was compiled and published at a con
siderable expense to the municipality
and while there has been consider
able dissatisfaction expressed in re
Sard to some of tho provisions, the
outcome of the balloting was a sur
prise to the city officials and to many
of tho townspeople. It was pre
sumed that tho explanations pre
sented somo time ago at tho charter
mass meeting by Recorder Wade and
Attorney George P. Topping, father
of tho move to reincorporate and
compiler of the rejected charter, had
removed opposition from tho minds
of tho disgruntled. A good deal of
electioneering was done by tho oppo
sition to tho movement while tho
charter people were caught napping
and did not appreciate tho strength
of their opponents. Tho defeat of
the proposition to extend the limits
of the municipality, was a foregono
conclusion. However, the sentiment
of the population, both within and
outside the present limits is shown
by the vote polled, which wns 44
against and 10 for the proposition
outside, and 81 for and 80 against it
within Bandon. Ten votes within the
city and one outside were rejected
by the board for irregularity. Some
scattering, misdirected votes

against the charter and for annexa
tion. The chief factors in the defeat
of the charter was tho extension of
the power of tho city council in tho
matter of taxing and tho annexation
clause was opposed on account of Its
taking in too much rural and un
developed land. It proposed to ex
tend the present area of about 240
acres to an area of more than 4,000
acres, while the population of tho
actual town of Bandon covers about
GOO acres. Robert Walker, Sr., and
Chris Rasmussen acted as judges of
election and C. R. Wade and A. D.
Morse as clerks. As tho municipality
Is still under a charter granted in

Defeats Marshfield In Seven
Innings by Score of Six to
Five Sunday.
North Bend defeated Marshfield
at tho North Bend grounds vesterday
afternoon by a score of six to five.
Only seven innings were played and
tho lineup was changed frequently
to glvo the various ones a chance but
the contest was a good one.
Tho new material this year is
showing up unusually strong and it
is not unlikely that a number of
last year's players maybe replaced
on both teams by new timber.
Manager Howard Is pleased with
tho prospects. Between 200 and 300
witnessed yesterday's game for which
twenty-flvo cents admittance was
charged.

pects are said to be very good.

sence of good material, may decide
not to organize a regular team for
