L1HHARY ENTERTAINMENT.
The purpose of tho Public Library
Commltteo to arrange and hold a
hlf-h class entertainment for the
benefit of tho public library for
Marshfleld Is ono In which all citi
zens should take part. The plan Is
to ask all citizens to purchase
tickets, not merely to obtain admis
sion and occupy a scat, but several
of them oven If only ono can bo
used. The committee already have
$2,000 subscribed toward the fund
and they expect to raise as much
more than two thousand dollars as
they possibly can, but, when
two thousand dollars aro obtained
they will purchase books and start
tho library Into actlvo circulation.
This fund of two thousand Is tho
basis of whatever action will bo
taken hereafter and will justify the
city government in extending the
assistance which tho law allows.
Tho entertainment of next Friday
evening is ono which should bo fi
nancially successful, as tho home
talent which will be employed, will
insuro ita complete literary and
artistic success. Marshfleld Is very
fortunate In being tho homo of a.
very high order of talent. Tho
musical features of Miss Painter,
Mrs. Ingram, Mrs. Lawlor and Pro
fessor Todd, will provo very at
tractive and tho artists who glvo
thorn aro well known and vory pop
ular. Mr. Lawrence A. LllljeQulst Is
well known as a lawyer of ability
and an all around athlete, but It Is
known only to a few of his friends
In this city that ho is a profound
student of Shnkospeakc, an nctlve
disciple of tho dramatic art and pos
sesses unusual histrionic ability. It
is not too much to say that, had ho
not chosen to follow tho profession
and practlco of law, ho would havo
taken vory high and perhaps tho
highest rank as un exponent of tho
great dramatic masters. Ho will
read from the now famous play en
titled Paolo and Francesca. This
play Is ono which, although ono of
Jho latest productions of Mr. Phillips,
tho now dramatic author nnd gonitis,
is declared by competent dramatic
critics to bo ono of tho inasterpleeo3
and equal to the best efforts of the
great Shakespeare himsolf.
Tho entertainment thcreforo will
ho a credit to the causo tho Free
Public Library and lo tho Intel
ligence of the pooplo of Marshllold.
It has been Intimated that some ob
jection Is offered to tho fact that cer
tain persons aro Interested In the
Library movement, and that certain
othors will not uphold tho movement
on that account. This is incon
ceivable. It Is a public benefit a
bonofit for all nn advantngo for
progressive Marshfleld which Is pro
posed. It Is not posslblo that any
porson could permit personal spleon
to enter Into tho question of whether
ho will range himself on tho sldo
of progress or against It. Tho ob
jection that this ontertnlnment Is be
ing given In Lent Is not good. Tho
churches which Inculcate most ear
nestly tho ohsorvnnco of Lent havo
no objection and tholr pastors hav
ing boon consulted on tho subject and
havo expressed tholr full approval of
tho occasion, tho tlmo and tho char
acter of tho ontortalnment. Tho
Times bolloves in progress nnd lio
lloves that It can bo best fostered by
helping such entertainments and In
tellectual Institutions ns tho Library
Commltteo propose
Alia Wcnzelburger, Miss Helen Lu
lls, Miss Emma Morris and Miss
Ruth MacDonald Berved a3 brides
maids. Dr. E. L. Wemplo assisted
Mr. MacDonald as be3t man. The
words of tho marriage service were
read by Rev. Charles R. Brown,
pastor of tho First Congregational
Church.
After an informal reception and
supper, Mr. and Mrs. MacDonald left
on an extended honeymoon trip,
which will take them to their now
homo In North Bend, Ore. Tho bride
Is a young society girl, who graduat
ed recently from tho Stato Univer
sity. Mr. MacDonald is engaged in
the lumber business at North Bend.
Vinco Pratt added laurels to his
reputation as an entertainer last
night at the Crystal theatre. As a
black-face artist he Is second to none
and ho was enthusiastically applaud
ed by tho two large audiences pres
ent. Tho four Alms presented arc
all up-to-date nnd every ono hits the
funny bone. Tho songs are accom
panied by some very fine colored
slides which are an entertainment
In themselves.
