DANTE'S HUMOR.
Tho humorous side of Dante Is ana
lyzed lu the Westminster Review by
George Trobrlilge, who Is n great ad
mirer of the famous poet unci who has
In previous writings expressed his ap
preciation of Dante as a nature poet
and as a novelist.
Although Dante's great poem is a
"comedy," In tho foiiso of being a
drama working to a happy ending, wo
do not look for ridiculous situations In
fit, such as we usually assoclato with
itho idea of comply. Ridiculous sltua
itlous occur nevertheless, and there Is
no lack of humor even In tho poet's do
ecrlptlon of tho bufferings of tho lost.
Danto's humor, however, Is of tho tin
.conscious kind, arising from a total
dack of perception of the ludicrous. It
ds snld tlint 19 was never seen to smile,
Wirt wo tan qulto bcllevo It, slnco ho
never forsaken sober seriousness hi his
writings, and it Is his deadly earnest
ness thnt betrays him Into occuslonnl
comicality.
Tho sinners in hell, tho poet tells us,
aro relegated to their proper quarters
on tho judgment of Minos, who hull--cates
tho particular clrclo to which the
.culprit ia consigned by wrapping his
ttall so many times uround ills bestial
body. Fancy tho trembling sinner
waiting to count tho colls that ho may
know his fate!
It is n horrlblo punishment which Is '
assigned to those guilty of simony, to
bo burle"d head downwurd in a circular
pit, with wily tho legs ami feet pro
"vudlng, while flickering flames glide
over tho soles of tho latter, Inflicting
exquisite torture, yet our sense of hu
mor Is provoked by tho description of
Dante standing over one of thet-o holes
and holding a conversation with its oc
cupant, "reversed, and as u stake
driven In tho soil," whllo numberless
legs wriggle In continual motion
around him.

Arrangements for Perfecting
Organization of Coos County
Fruit Growers.
A meeting of the fruit growers of
this section was held In tho city re
corder's ofllce recently, and after
reading tho minutes of tho previous
meeting it was proposed that the
name be changed to the Coquillo Val
ley Fruit Growers' Association of
Coqullle. F. S. Dow was present and
addressed tho meeting, and in his re
marks stated that he was In favor of
such an organization, and advised
that a county association bo formed
and incorporated, so that buyers
would not bo compelled to do busi
ness with several associations, but
with only one body; that last year
25,000 boxes of apples were shipped
from this county, 5,000 of them be
ing Gravensteins. He advised grow
ers to make these apples a specialty,
as they come at a time of the year
when other fruit is scarce and there
Is the least fluctuation in prices.
Others also spoke in favor of coun
ty organization, with delegates from
the several localities in Coos county
A motion was made that the chair
man appoint delegates to attend the
next meeting of the Myrtle Point
association with a view of joining
that body, and to work together to
form an Incorporated county associa
tion. The chair appointed as such
a committee Messrs. Davis, Hooten,
Howie and Holverstott. Tho chair
appointed all present as a committee
on future work to obtain a larger at
tendanco at the next meeting, on
April 4. Coquillo Sentinel.
