(By Associated Pres3.)
SAN FRANCISCO, March 23.
Following a physical attack by four
Koreans at the Fairmont Hotel last
night, D. W. Stevens, a member of
the Japanese council at Seoul, was
shot this morning at the Ferry De
pot as he was about to leave for
Washington. The shooting was done
by N. W. Chun, a Korean. Stevens
was shot twice, one bullet penetrating
the right lung and the other tho
groin. A third bullet struck a com
panion of the shooter, I. W. Chong.
A mob of five hundred pursued
the shooter who ran from the scene.
Finally ho was captured by H. Sex
ton, a deputy in the assessor's ofllco.
Stevens accompanied by tho Jap
anese consul, had Just stepped out
of the hotel bus when several
Koreans approached them. One of
them said a few words to Stevens,
then struck him in the face, and
pulled a revolver wrapped in a hand
kerchief, and began shooting Ste
vens. Attack Lnst Night.
The attack on Stevens at the Fair
mont last night was the outcome of
a visit of a committee of four
Koreans who called upon Stevens to
verify an interview in the news
papers in which Stevens applauded
the attitude of Japan in Korea.
Stevens did not retract his state
ments and he was knocked down, his
head striking the marble floor. Ho
arose, quickly seized a chair and
held assailants at bay until assist
ance arrived.
Attitude of Koreans.
Speaking for the committee, one
Earl Lee, who speaks English, said
that whilo Stevens is paid by tho
Korean Government, he is doing
what the Korean people do not want
him to do and that in' reality Ste
vens is in the service of Japan and
that "since Japan began to protect
Korea thousands of my countrymen
have been killed, their property con
fiscated and hundreds of villages
burned by Japanese troops." The
Japanese want open schools In Ko
rea to teach their own language but
no school unless It bo Japanese.
They disbanded the Korean troops
because they were loyal and because
so long as Korea had soldiers, Japan
could not do much in this country.
Japan planned to send six million
emigrants to Korea in the next eight
years. If Japan controls my coun
try for two or three years, Korea
will be Japan or a part of it."
Tho Koreans also charged Stevens
with being in this country as a spy
for Japan.
Stevens' View of It.
Stevens has been advisor to the
Korean counsel since November,
1904. From 1883 to that time he
was a legal advisor to tho Japaneso
legation at Washington.
In an interview with a representa
tive of the Associated Press at the
hospital, Stevens attributed the as
saults to students agitators who be
lieve that Stevens is responsible for
Japan's protectorate over Korea.
The physicians express tho belief
that Stevens will recover unless un
expected complications develop. Ho
has a strong physique and is in ex
cellent health.

Southern Pacific Raising Cap
ital for Extending Line
From Drain West.
NEW YORK, March 23. The
Southern Pacific needs new capital.
On June 30, last, the Southern Paci
fic company showed a floating debt
of $33,710,846. Its only source of
new capital since then has been a
balance of $19,153,207 on subscrip
tions to $35,295,123 new preferred
stock. Its need of new caplttal is
occasioned by its improvements and
extensions in the West.
On the Cananea, Yaqui River &
Pacific line 111 miles are buiding
and on the Inter-California, 33 miles.
On the Oregon Western Railway
some 82 miles of expensive construc
tion is contemplated and for this is
a great deal of material had already
been provided and tunneling and
grading were progressing at the close,
of the last fiscal year and will be
rushed this year.
It will be perhaps conservative to
say that the Southern Pacific in tho,
current fiscal year could easily use
between $20,000,000 and $25,000,
000 new capital.
The Oregon Western Railway is
the proposed Drain-Coos Bay lino and
the above simply confirms the con
fidence of the people here that the
railroad will be in operation within
a comparatively short time.

NORTH BEND
DBYJONDAY
Saloons Closed There Yester
day for First Time in Years.
J. C. Wilcox arrested.
For probably the first time in the
history of North Bend, or at least In
many years, the saloons there were
closed on Sunday yesterday. Tho
saloon men complied strictly with tho
recently enacted "lid" ordinance
there, no liquor being sold after mid
night Saturday. Tho shades were
drawn and "nothing doing this side
of Marshfleld" was tho word passed
down the lino of those who sought
thirst quenchers.
J. C. Wilcox, 'the dance hall pro
prietor, was arrested about 12:20
Saturday night for violating the or
dinance which provided that he was
to close up at midnight. Today, he
explained that city officials sometime
ago explained to him that It would
be all ..right to remain open until 1
o'clock. AOn account of this explana
tion and the understanding that ho
lp willing to promise to comply here
after, It was understood that tho
charge would be dismissed this time.
Af a new North Bend ordinance pro
vides that dance halls, cannot be
operated within the city limits of
North Bend, It Is xepected at North
Bend that- Mr. Wilcox will arrange
to movo his place outside of the city.
Many Candidates Participate
in "Workout" Game at
North Bend Sunday.
The baseball season for Marshfleld
and North Bend was Initiated yester
day with a practice game, more in
tho nature of a "workout" of tho
possibilities than a regular match,
on tho North Bend grounds. There
was a large turnout of candidates
and onlookers, Indicating that there
will bo even more general interest
in tho game this year than in pre
vious seasons.
During the game between tho two
nines, frequent changes were made
In the line-ups to prevent working
anyone too hard and also to glvo
everyone possible a tryout. Tho
North Bend aggregation showed up
better than Marshfleld but local fol
lowers are very well satisfied with
the prospects for a good team.
Manager Charles Howard of tho
Marshfleld team will shortly call a
meeting of tho managers of tho
North Bend, Bandon, Myrtle Point
and Coquillo teams to arrange a
league and schedule for tho season.
It Is certain that Bandon, Coqullle,
North Bend and Marshfleld will have
teams in tho field and likely that
Myrtlo Point will also organize.
Manager Bedllllon of tho Bandon
club was in attendance at tho prac
tice yesterday and Is anxious to havo
tho arrangements made and tho sea
son started off with a rush, Owing
to a couplo of now fast boats that
will bo put In sorvico soon, Bandon
will bo more accessible to tho other
towns in tho circuit than horetoforo.

BASEBALL IN
OPEN SEASON
Almost Captured North Bend's
Delegation to County Con
vention Saturday.
HAD MAJORITY OF
VOTES IN MEETING.
Opposition Tricks Them by
Closing Nominations Before
All Were Nominated.
The North Bend republican caucus
Saturday afternoon to select dele
gates to tho county convention at
Ci qulllo Tuesday, March 23, unex
pectedly developed into ono of tho
warmest ever held there as a result
of tho recently organized Law and
Order League entering into it and
contesting for tho delegation. Had
it not been for a fluke, tho Law and
delegation and as it was four of their
Order League would havo secured tho
candidates were elected. Tho Law
and Order League is said to havo had
a clear majority of eight In the cau
cus. The fluke that prevented tho Law
and Order League under the leader
ship of tho Rev. Lacey securing a
sweeping victory came In a peculiar
way. The other faction nominated
its candidates In a bunch, just as
their ticket was made out. Tho Law
and Order League instead ot doing
likewise started to nominate theirs
ono by one. After a half a dozen
had been nominated in this manner.
Judge Guery moved that tho Law and
Order League bo compelled to nomi
nate their candidates in a body. A
hot discussion followed, the Law and
Order League suspecting that tho mo
tion was "loaded" against them and
consequently opposing it. However
it carried. Hardly had the scono
cleaied and before quiet had been
restored when some one moved
that tho nominations be declared
closed. This motion also carried, al
though only about a half dozen of tho
Law and Order League candidates
had been nominated and were eligi
ble to receive votes.
Some Warm Speeches.
Prior to this, there wero n numbpr
of warm speeches. Judge Guery and
A. H. Derbyshire scoring tho Law
and Order Leaguo for having held a
secret caucus Friday evening to ar
range to capture the regular caucus.
The charge of having held a secret
meeting was not refuted by tho re
presentatives of tho Law and Order
Leaguo who maintained that such
meetings wero all right.
C. E. Maybeo was elected chairman
of the caucus, A. Whlsenant secre
tary and Judge Guery and A. H.
Derbyshire tellers. Tho two tlckots
were as follows:
Law and (Order "League Scott
Morris, F. A. Davenport, F. E. Glaz

Thus it will bo seen that Judgo

About forty-flvo participated in tho
caucus.
Thoro was some talk of Instructing
