Editor Times: What has becomo
of tho Chandler hotel which it waa
expected would provido accommoda
tions for the visiting and traveling
public which may happen into this
city or on Coos Bay? Is it not re
markable that nearly nil hotels pro
posed are nothing but air castles?
My own residence In this city and vi
cinity has been long, nnd I havo great
confidence in the future of this place,
but I am appalled at the fiascos
which nearly all hotel propositions
result in. There was to bo a large,
first class hotel in North Bend, but
after being located in two or threo
different spots it vanished altogether
and we hear nothing moro about it.
There was a big hotel a very big
one going in at Bangor, but it la
never spoken of any more. Two dif
ferent hotels were actually begun,
underground and overhead, On Plat
B, but they vent tho way of all
earthly things beforo they became
very earthly. Now we bqlievo an
other ono is being designed for that
seat of"unlimited resources."
I surely thought tho hotel in
Marshfield, which was decided upon
nearly a year ago, would materialize.
I understand it has done so to tho ex
tent of a subscription paper, an in
corporation, a plan on paper and a
selected site. Not a shovel full of
dirt has been displaced. Nothing can
bo learned nbout.it. Tho subscrip
tion to stock was supposed to bo and
probably is very good. So aro tho
incorporation, the namo and tho site.
But what is tho matter? It has been
learned that tho architect is all
ready, but tho delay is ono which
finds Its cause outside of him. Tho
hotel is in a sense a pub'le enter
prise, although it is also a private
Institution. The fact that It ss pro
posed, and that tho public Is assured
that it is certain to be built, keeps
all other hotel movements down. In
tho meantime the little village hotels
of tho city are insufficient and tho
accommodations so slight that many
visitors go away disgusted. If tho
people who aro' expecting to build
,"Tho Chandler" can't 'build it, tho
publfc would like to know it. If thoy
can but won't, tho public has no ob
ligation but would liko to know it
so they can take it up along other
lines. But wo can't bo charged with,
undue impatience- who have waited
for a much needed hotel for fivo
years, when this ono is kept coming
months after It ought to bo in sight.
