Ingenious Cypher.
The following was written by
Professor Whewell at the request of
a young lady:
U 0 a 0, but I 0 U,
O 0 no 0, but O 0 mo; '
O let not my 0 a 0 go,
But give 0 0 I 0 U bo.
Thus deciphered:
(You sigh for a cypher, but I sigh for
you,
O, sigh for no cypher, but O sigh for
me:
O let not my sigh for a cypher go,
But give sigh for sigh, for I sigh for
you so.)
The Results.
Upon tho yellowed fly-leaf of an
old Bible found In the corner stone
of an old mission recently torn down
the following lines appear In a small,
quaint handwriting:
King David and King Solomon
Led merry, merry lives,
With many, many lady friends
And many, many wives.
When old age crept over them,
With many, many qualms,
King Solomon wrote tho Proberb"
And King David wrote the Psalms.

Nothing to eat but food;
Nothing to wear but clothes,
To keep one from going nude.
Nothing to breatho but air;
Quick as a flash 'tis gone.

Nowhere to stand but on.
Nothing to comb but hair;
Nowhere to sleep but bed;
Nothing to weep but tears;
Nothing to bury but dead.
Nothing to sing but songs;

Nowhero to go but out;
Nowhero to come but back.

can not tako care of a .v'fo besides,
tho attorney declares.
"Why, Mr. Moore recently received

against him in Phila-llrhM where
they were nu rrled, nnl tint hi

accumulated alimony in New Jersey
he crossed to New York. The ali
mony claim, at tho rate of 325 -a
month, now calls for moro than ?19.
000. Says Ho Is Bankrupt.
Mr. Moore had himself declared a.
bankrupt, because he couldn't keep
track of his liabilities aniL.because he
was "broke," though getting from
$1600 to $2500 a month.
This remarkable man, who is liv
ing secluded In a big New York apart
ment house, the exact whereabouts of
which his attorney will not reveal,
has a housekeeper named Mrs. Anna
Belmont. She is named by Mrs.
Mooro in her divorce suit.
Some of His Characteristics.
According to AttonoySnydeckcr his
client:
Never worked In his life.
Never kept a bank account.
Spends more than $25,000 every
year and can not tell whore or how
he spends it.
Spends $100 a night for wine.
Never drinks any intoxicant but
wine, although his father headed a
big whiskey firm.
Never walks in the city, but uses a
cab if ho but crosses the street.
Pays $G000 a year for a New York
apartment.
Pays $C00 a hundred for cigars
"mado to order".
Denies he can spare alimony to his
wifo, because his cab, theatre and
flower bills take all of his available
cash.
Always wears n bouttonler, for
which his florist has grown a special
flower.
Can't remom,ber when ho was mar
ried or when his wife sued him for
divorce or of any alimony decrees be
ing issued against him.
Don't Remember Marringc.
The attorney said that he asked his
client about tho marriage which re
sulted in tho separation and that
Moore told him this story:
"Well, sir, I don't remember get
ting married. But one morning I
found a young lady in my homo. I
was surprised, sir, and said so. 'Why,
dear, don't you know that wo woro
married last night?' said she. "Well,
if that ia what you say I guess wo
were, but I don't remember anything
about it,' I told her, and since then
she has claimed mo as her husband."
Last night Attorney George S. Gra
ham, for Mrs. Mooro, declared that
Bottloment of tho suit for alimony
had boon roachod and that it would
bo presented in court as soon as it
could be reduced to writing.
In August, 1903, James L. Deegan,
a truck driver, broko into apartment
occupied by Mooro at 209 West Nlne-ty-sovonth
street, and attacked tho
millionaire becauso ho thought tho
latter had lured Mrs. Deegan from

Moore had a jury drawn to examine
her husband for his sanity, alleging
that he withheld the necessities of

lav'shed "not only monoy, but costly
clothes, diamonds, carriages and
