A manual training high school Is
not theoretic, it is intensely practical,
and has been so demonstrated. In
these days there is great specializa
tion of work. A man's genius in one
direction is cultivated and furnishes
hib trade, or shapes his career. The
manual training high school uncovers
this genius or talent and shapes and
directs it. A poor boy with talent

Important and always Interesting
subject. In view of tho approach

question of a $50,000 bond issue for
a now high school, it is particularly
appropriate and timely. The article
-will be found well worth reading,
and in some respects remarkable
when considered as the production of
a young girl only in her teens.
Marshfield and Coos Bay may well be
proud of Miss Helen Bradley. In
spiration and helpful suggestion are
happily blended in her thoughtful
thesis. The following is tho article
in full:
Mow to Improve the School Facilities
Of Mnrslilleld.
I take as a premise that tho sub
ject of this essay is not limited In
tlmo to tho present, and also that it
dees not include material advantages,
such as buildings or sites, which,
therefore, I shall omit, but rather
the instruction given and the means
of Imparting it.
A complete educational system em
braces four branches tho kinder
garten, the grammar school, tho high
school, and tho university. Of theso,
Marshfield has an excellent grammar
school, and as tho college Is beyond
tho scope of this artielo, only tho
kindergarten and tho high school re
main to be discussed.
The kindergarten confers a three
fold benefit, early discipline, a lovo of
the beautiful, and application. Hero
tho young children havo a second
home, their natural lovo and appre
ciation of tho beautiful and good are
cultivated, their good traits are de
veloped, they are kept busy, aud
above all, they nro gontly disciplined
and taught to respect authority and
to ba obedient, without tho strain ot
actual work. They learn tho lessons
of order and politeness which servo
them woll in later life. They nro
taught to amuse and busy themselves

provides him with this and he follows
tho bent of his taste and learns his
tiadc, carrying It on at the same time
with his academic course. This is
only one instance of the practicability
of tho Manual Training High School.
It Is, as the word "manual" means,
o school in which manual training i3

to work with their hands.
Mechanical and free-hand drawing,
wood-working, carving, carpentry,
turning, forging, mechanics, mechani

branches of electricity are taught the
boys. Departments In sewing, cook
ing, millinery, house-keeping, draw
ing and music are furnished the girls.

A benefit that cannot fall to appeal
to parents and guardians is tho fact
that the manual training high school
will create ten times the amount of
interest that is taken in tho present
school work, and will be the much
needed stimulus to school spirit.
Boys who otherwise would leave
school and spend their tlmo on the
streets, will take an active interest in
their studies on account of the vari
ety offered, and will find their ambi
tions stimulated by preparation for
useful occupation later on.
It Marshfield intends ever to be

Years ago cities of tho East adopted

and not let Its dormant talents rust
