Connecticut Representative Explains
Allegations llcforo Congres

WASHINGTON, March 12. Tho
special committee appointed by
Speaker Cannon to investigate tho
charges made by Congressman Lilly
that undue efforts had been made by
the Electric Boat Company to Influ
ence legislation resumed its sittings
today with all Ave committeemen
present and tho spacious room filled
with newspaper1 men and other Inter
ested spectators. At tho opening of
the session Representative Lilly ad
dressed tho committee, saying that ho
desired to correct tho impression that
had been created by the report of
tho committee on rules to tho effect
that ho had charged that members of
congress had been bribed.
He denied that he made such
charges, but said that up to tho pres
ent time his accusation had been sole
ly against tho Electric Boat company
and its predecessor, tho Hollander
company, and had covered tho point
that these companies had made ef
forts to influence legislation by con
gress. Mr. Lilly read a carefully pre
pared statement.

ments ifor a concert to bo given in
the Masonic Opera House in Marsh
field, Saturday evening, March 21.
This band is generally recognized as
one of the best concert bands in Ore
gon, numbering among its members
several professional musicians and
soloists. It has been under a profes
sional musical director for five years,
and has received general recognition
as a musical organization of merit.
It has 24 pieces, and all instruments
are among the finest made. Their
program will consist of a number of
popular as well as classical airs, and

morning for Coquille, whero he
will remain a business visitor for
a few days, thenco going to Ban
don and on through Curry county.
Mr. Peterson will return after a
two weeks' absence and resume his
work in Marshfield.
W. W. RICHARDS, of Sap Francisco,
but who has recently been making
his homo on Coos Bay, was mar
ried on March 4 at Los Angeles to
Miss Varda Reynolds, of El Paso,
Texas. Tho hearty congratula

MRS. D. B. BROOD Intends leaving
North Bend tomorrow for her
home in Portland. Mrs. Brood has
been on Coos Bay for some time
visiting with her sister, but espec
ially for tho Improvement of her
health, which has been seriously
threatened with consumption. Mrs.
Brood will return to North Bend
next winter.
MISS AGNES RUTHBY, of Minne
apolis, accompanied by Miss Ella
Bayley, of Coos Bay, left Marsh
field today on an extended trip
through tho east. They will visit
friends In Portland for n week,
thenco going to Donver, Colo., and
also to Bozeman, Mont., where
they will remain with relatives for
a short time. Miss Bayley will be
tho guest of Miss Ruthby at her
homo during tho coming summer,
returning to Coos Bay in tho fall.

fow days hero. Had it not been for a
two or three hour delay caused by tho
heavy fog, tho trip would havo been
made in about forty hours.

which has laid him up temporarily
with a sprained back.
Hugh Hogan Delayed. Tho Hugh
Hogan, bound for Coos Bay, is out of
San Francisco seven days, and there
is some anxiety in shipping circles as
to her safety.

will meet Friday, March 13, at 3
o'clock, at tho home of Mrs. Frank
