R. D. Hume Announces Plan to
Dispose of 15,000 Acres
of His Kingdom in Curry.
The following news contained In a
recent press dispatch from Salem,
Oregon, will prove interesting to
readers of The Times, as It. D. Hume,
tho Salmon King, Is well known in
Coos county. The dispatch says:
"R. D. Hume, the Rogue River
Salmon King, whoso winter homo is
at Piedmont, an aristocratic suburb
of Oakland, California, was here Sun
day between trains and told a Journal
representative that ho had made all
his plans to give away his large hold
ings of land on a new plan that will
bring many settlers to Curry county.
Ho proposes to cut up tho larger part
of his 15,000 acres Into 20-acro tracts
and glvo each family locating on one
of them a cow, a pig and some chick
ens, and let them have tho land rent
free for five years. Tho other 15
years he will ask them to pay $2 per
acre rent and taxes, and at the end
ol that timo they will get a deed to
the property. Besides, they will have
free timber and free use of a sawmill
to cut all the lumber needed for im
provements. Tho experiment will be
tried first with' 20 families. If that
succeeds ho will locate 20 more. He
intends to make Curry -county the
ideal place for thrifty, Industrious
families.
Mr. Hume says he has no political
ambitions and would not take a placo
in the United States Senate if it wore
offered to him.
The Drain and Coos Bay stage line
has transferred its Marshfield agency
from Norton & Hansen store to H. C.

making a business tour of Coos
county for tho first timo in four
years. Mr. Brown formerly came
to Coos Bay threq times a year, but
in 1904 was changod by tho firm

Upon tho petition of tho Coos Baj;
Coal and Lumber Company the coun
ty court last week confirmed tho re
port of tho road viewers and de
clared tho road located by them
through tho lands of Anton Ander
son, Alfred Brunnel and Andreas An
derson, on South Inlet, a county road.
The county court denied the peti
tioner's prayer for a franchise for a
logging railroad upon such road for a
period of ten years to tho Smith
Powers Logging Company. This
company proposes to transport logs,
for the different concerns which own
timber in that locality upon reasona
ble rates. Among others tho Mena-
sha Woodenware Company, Coos Bay
Lumber & Coal Company, Smith
rowers Logging Company and Simp
son Lumber Company, aro the owners
of largo holdings in tho country
drained by South Slough.
Tho ranchers mentioned above
whoso lauds aro cut up by reason
of tho new road may review the d-i-clslon
of the county court on tho
giounds that tho statute is unconstitutional.

A pretty 'wedding took placo at tho
homo of Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Guerin
at 11 o'clock Thursday, when B. T.
VanDecar, of Salem, brother of Mrs.
Guerin, and Miss Sarah M. Kruse of
Marshfield were united in marriage
by Rev. Thomas Barklow, only tho
relatives of the contracting parties
being present.
After the ceremony and congratu
lations, a fine dinner was served in
tho afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Van
Decar left for Prosper, where they
will make a brief visit at tho homo
of tho bride's brother, Archie Kruse.
From there they will go to Marsh
field for another short visit, and will
leave on tho next Breakwater for
Portland and from there to Salem,
where the groom has a fine homo
prepared for his bride. Mr. VanDe
car has a position there with the well
known firm of John G. Barr & Co.,
having charge of tho watch and dia
mond department as salesman and
watchmaker.
Tho groom Is well known In this
city, whero ho has a host of friends.
He has made this his homo for 11
ot 12 years, with tho exception of tho
past year or two, when ho has been
on tho road for a jewelry house.

county, having boon born at Marsh
field, whero her father was a pioneer

among tho people of the county who
will unite In tho best wishes for her
