DAIRYING VS. GOLD MIXING.
That the dairying interests of the
country grow weary of the public's
continued devotion to pursuits of a
more speculative nature, is not sur
prising when the facts relating' to
productive energy are considered.
It has recently been said that all the
mlneowners of the great Tauana dis
trict in Alaska could they secure tha
services of 7,000 men, would be able
this year to push tho total gold pro
duction of tho Tanana up to ?1G,
000,000. Tho glitter of this statement at
tracts tho public eye. The figur.n
aro enormous. Yet the dairy farms
of Oregon last year produced $17,
000,000 and it is doubtful if there
are 7,000 men engaged on the dairy
farms of Oregon. The Tanana -e-gion
comprises an area of about l'o
by 225 miles, gridlroned by gold
bearing streams. Tho strictly dairy
ing area of Oregon does not exceed
these figures. But the meek-eyed
cows that feed thereupon produce
more gold than the sum of Tanana's
wildest dream. Nobody gots excited
over the cow. There is no stampedo
to tho dairy farms. Why is it?
It is not a question of work. Tha
most industrious dairyman does not
put in harder or longer hours of toil
than does tho miner who works in
tho mines of Tanana. Conditions up
thero are said to, bo so oppressive
that human enduianco i3 tried and
tho miners have gone on a strike.
The people of tho dairy forms evi
dently are better situated, for they
never go on strikes. Tho main rea
son -why men go to tho mines is be
cause of tho lust for adventure. If
an atmosphere of romance and dan
ger could be Introduced into tho cow
pasture they would go Into the dairy
business.
It is a fact beyond question that an
Oregon farm Is a better producer
than tho average gold mine. Tho
Alaska miner works assiduously from
morning' till night at tho hardest
kind of toil. Tho same amount of
ivnnual labor put into an SO-acro
farm In Oregon will produce more
wealth than tho average mining
claim in Alaska or anywhoro on
earth. Possession of a farm brings
to a man ono thing of vnluo abovo
a'l others a feeling of peace and
security against the inevitable day
when old ago touches him with its
palsied hand and bids him rest from
his labors. Ills farm is a "claim"
tVat ho himself can work or that ho
can employ others to work. And It
will nlways produce. Tho pay
streak never "plays out," says tho
Oregon Journal, and it might havo
trnUifully ndded that Coos county tho
second In tho state in dnlrying, has
tho best pay streak on tho Pacific
coast.
CEXT-A-WORD TKLKGUAP1I.
For tho major part of a century wo
havo enjoyed tho blessings of tho
telegraph, and it Is still among tho
exponent things that go to mako tho
arm of civilization and progress; but
inn n is beginning to realize that tho
boiioilpenco Is costing him altogether
too much; that tho peoplo who havo
monopolized tho facilities aro e.x
piltlng tho masses and havo been for
y ars. At loast ono of thorn.
k Tho reaction has set in and tho day
for adjustment Is at hand. Tho Tole
post, tho nowest application on tho
srionco, has Instituted a public sor
vi o that costs hut a cent a word,
whatever tho distance, and Is making
n liberal profit on that basis; thoro
foro tho other great concorns havo
Kt to como to tho lowor margin and
be satisflod with a modified and mod
erate profit.
This Is ns It should bo. Tho Amer
ican peoplo aro tho most generous on
earth In tholr support of all masterly
conveniences and too rarely ques

Near the town of Up-against-It, in
the land of Root-or-die,
We havo found our very finest in
spiration, you and I.
Tolling up the hill called Have-to,
with Compulsion for a guide,
We have made the sort of effort that
was never yet denied.
In the way were Can't and Couldn't,
with his brother. Whatt's-the-use,
While our dearest foe, Born-weary,
seized with joy each poor excuse.
Yet behind us, unrelenting, drove our
heartless master, Must.
And our feet essayed no lagging,
spite of hill, or heat, or dust.
It was there wo grow the sinews for
tho struggle, you and I
Near the town of Up-against-it, in the
land of Root-or-die.
Near that village, Up-against-It, in
tho land of Root-or-die,
Wo discovered possibilities un
dreamed of you and I.
Were there heartaches in that jour
ney? Little then, our master cared,
As along that stony highway under
whip and spur wo fared.
Bread-and-butter trudged beside us,
with a keen and ruthless goad,
That should quicken halting foot
stops if wo loitered on tho rood.
Pride and Spunk, two comely sisters,
lured us on with myriad wiles
All the master's welts were painless
as we feasted on their smiles.
So our hearts grew strong to con
quer, as wo plodded you and I
Past the hamlet, Up-against-it, in the
land of Root-or-die.
Success.
