GRANTS PASS, Ore., Feb. 28.
"Ono million in virgin gold!" This
is the slogan of tho southern Oregon
placer miners for this season. Most
of tho surface properties are already
thundering their giants, and many
others will soon follow. Tho rains
continuo heavy, with an abundanco
of , now on the ranges. Tho diggers
arc jubilant, and all things indicate
a splendid season and a big harvest.
A good feature of this year's placer
operations in southern Oregon Is the
operation of the multitude of smaller
mines. These mlne3 are located on
shallow but exceptionally rich
ground. Tho output of each Is
small, but tho total makes a big
sum. The operation of these gulch
diggings is m ado possible by tho
heavy, warm rains, causing big flows
in tho smaller streams.
It seems certain that the Green
back and Granite Hill mines will
soon resume. Both have been idle
for a year. Tho Greenback em
ployed 150 men and tho Granite Hill
100. Internal troubles were largely
responsible for tho closlnig of tho
properties. It is announced that
these have been adjusted.
Quart in Gnlice District.
There is greater activity in the
old camp of Galico than since tho
palmy days. Present activity, how
ever, is centered on tho quartz
mines, whereas it was on tho placer
diggings before. Several fabulous
strikes have been made, notably on
tho Oriole, Copper Eagle and Teddy.
The Oriole has been shipping $400
ore, and has a quantity of It ready
to ship. The Almeda company has a
largo crew employed on Its mammoth
i copper properties. This Is now one
, of tho deepest developed in southern
' Oregon. It has more than two miles
tof underground work, all in oro. The
lledgo is 200 feet wide and carries
' high grade smelting ore from wall to
I wall. The company has completed
the wagon road route from the mine
l to Galico, making a through wagon
road to Merlin, over which It will
houl shipping ore. The United
States forest service, at an expense
of 10,000 is completing tho trail
down from Rogue river from Galice
to the sea. This trail will glvo a
shorter route into the lower Rogue,
river mining district.
Little Mine, but Rich.
J. E. Kirk & Son, owners and man
agers of tho Lucky Bart mine, oC
Gold Hill district, have mado another
cleanup, securing a $G00 brick from
18 tons of oro removed from tho
paystreak. They havo been working
on this paystreak for several months,
and cleanups havo been mado regu
larly. Though tho Lucky Bart is
not a big property, it is making a
fortuno for its owners.
Though unable to operato tho
smelter In winter, the TakilmA
Smelting company maintains a lirgo
crew on its copper properties in tho
Waldo district. Tho mines aro being
deeply developed, and an immense
body of oro uncovered, more, In fact,
than the smelter in its short summer
runcan reduce, but It Is the hope ot
the company that a railroad will ul
timately bo built into tho district.
Satisfied With Windy Hollow.
The Pino Creek district is show
ing up better than ever. One of tho
properties is installing a stamp mill.
Several others will place milling;
equipment next spring.
Windy Hollow district is more
quiet than during tho summer. Tho
mine owners have done their assess
ment work and are content to let
tho winter's work pas3 with that.
The district is remote, and it is al
most Impossible to get in supplies
except in summer. -
R. S. Mooro has leased the Babr
mine of Jump-Off-Joe district and
will operato it this winter. This
property has been under develoment
for several years. It is owned by
Sacramento and Boise mining men.
G. W. Troutwlno and associates
have bought a controlling interest
in tho Oregon Belle mine of Thomp
son creek district. Dr. Troutwine is
manager.
