IiIDIlAItlES AXI HAPPINESS
Tho great purpose of a public li
brary is to promote and unite Intelli
gence. It brings together the pro
ducts of the wise minds of the
world. It holds within its wall3 a
collection of all the wise and witty
things ever bald. These It marks
and indexes and offers to Its friends.
It Is in its community a sort of
intellectual mlnutoman, always
ready to supply to every comer some
thing of interest and pleasure. It
puts good booUs, and uo o'lier into
tho hands of the children. It tells
you about Cinderella and informs
you on riots in Moscow. It offers
you a novel on modern Japan, and
a history of Venice of the past. It
knows about tho milk in the cocoa
nut, tho floods of the river Nile, the
advantages of education, tho evils
of "legislation, how to plan a home,
why bread won't rise, and can tell
more about the hugeness of our task
at Panama, and tho mantil failings
that give Jamaica and V'jue.u"ia
trouble than .most of our congress
men ever dreamed of.
I am a great believer, as you see,
in reading, and I think with good
reason. It is better worth our while,
If, while we live, wo live much,
learn, see, understand, enjoy many
things. Reading is tho short cut
into tho heart of life.
If you are talking with a group
of friends about, for example, dif
ferent parts of the United States, and
Bomeone happens to mention a city
or town In which you have lived,
note how your interest quickens, and
how eager you aro to hear news of
tho place or to tell your experience
in it. This Is a simple everyday
fact. Tho same thing you have ob
served a thousand times about any
subject or talk with which you may
bo familiar. Wo learn about manv
things just by keeping alive aud
moving around. Thoso things wo
have lenrned about wo can't help
being Interested in. That Is tho wav
wo aro made. If wo knew moro
about things our interests would be
greater In number, keener, more sat
isfying; wo would talk more, ask
moro questions, bo moro alert, get
more pleasure.
Tho lesson from this Is plain
.enough: If you wish to have a
good time, learn something. You
llko to meet old friends. Your
.brain, also, likes to como across
things it knows nlready, and to re
new acquaintance with tho knowledge-
it 1ms stored away and half
forgotten. Tho pleasuro of i-ccog
nition and association; tho delights
of lonowlng your friendship with
your own ideas aro many, easy to
get, never falling. Rut If you wish
to have Interests and delights In
good plenty, you must know of many
things. So, 1 say, if you wish to bo
happy, learn something.
This sounds llko advice to a stu
dent. It is not; it is a suggestion
to tho wayfarer, For this learning
process may bo us delightful as It Is
to gather (lowers by tho roadsldo In
n Biunmor walk. .1. C. Dana.

His many friends believe that
on this venture ho will profit by past

the old timer out of a mental calcu

decisive; "if you want to find out
about that rooster ask Hank Wells."
Whether tho new arrival found
Hank Wells or not Is a matter of

it Is certain that he became acquaint

Don't you remember, you folks
who havo traveled around, to
over havo run across somo queer
genus of tho animal kingdom which

Did you over notico how surprisingly

seems, that, by some miraculous pro
cess of subtraction and addition, all
tho lower animal traits, common to
Its forbears, havo been eliminated
and replaced by an Intelligence al
most human in its keenness. Of
courso Hank's rooster has tho ad
vantngo of being a descendant of a
long lino of domestic fowls. This
long and intimate companionship
gives tho Httlo red rooster an add
ed degreo of brain matter over his
loss fortunato domesticated brothers
of tho jungle Tho rooster's kindred
ness to human nature is manifest In
many ways, tho strongest resemb

ho has such an abnormal fighting ap

But these occasions aro rare. Hour

And then there will bo much strut
ting, mingled with joyful crowing on
tho part of the Httlo red rooster,
while tho little mother hen will cluck
