Andrew Carnegie Is a great man.
He is one of tho instruments of
Providence.
Through him a vast fortune has
5een accumulated.
Is It Carnegie's?
Yes.
But what Is a fortune?
It is merely a pile of money.
Nobody can eat it or drink it.
Even Carnegie can't do that.
All he can do is to accumulate and
distribute it.
Ho accumulated as an incident.
He distributes it because it isn't
prorth keeping.
If the state, city or nation had
Chis fortune it could not find a bet
ter way to spend it than to estlbllsh
libraries.
Some people object to talcing Mr.
Carnegie's money.
Why?
Tho people, producers and con
sumers, made it.
Mr. Carnegie Is not to blame for
having it.
Society gave him tho opportunity
to get It.
It really belongs to the people.
All Mr. Carneglo can do is to use
Ills judgment as to how best to dis
burse it.
Why shouldn't Marshflold take It?
Nobody over claimed that Cnrno
Cio's money was "tainted."
If it was, tho best way to purify it
would it bo to put It where it can do
Good.
3f a man steals your money and re
lenting or not, offers to givo It back,
will you refuse to tako it bceauso It is
tainted?
Who tainted it, tho robber who
stole it, or the fool who wouldn't tako
tt
But Mr. Carneglo is neither robber
nor fool, and Is realty a great and
wiso man.

A Life.
Day dawned within a curtained room,
Filled to faintuess with perfume,
A lady lay at point of doom.
Day closed a child had seen the
light;
But for the lady, fair and bright,
She rests In undreaming night.
Spring rose the lady's grave was
green,
And near It oftentimes was seen
A gentje boy, with thoughtful meln.
Years fled ho wore a manly face,
And struggled on the world's rough
race,
And won, at last, a lofty place.
And then ho died! Behold yo
Humanity's poor sum and story;
Life Death and all that is of
glory.
BARRY CORNWALL.
An esteemed lady reader of Tho
Times who read with interest tho
alleged poetic effusions inspired in
tho Poet's Corner of tho Milllcoma
Club was deeply concerned in tho
Incident of Rose and Jack. She
thinks Jack did right and that those
cynically critical poets were wrong
for being so exercised. She prepared
tho following answers to each ono of
them and which Tho Times Is pleased
to publish, if you will look up your
Valentino paper you will And that
each critic is carefully answered:
Now Jack was right
if ho did so.
Oh! Bill, what makes you growl
When you can't make It go.
Now If Roso returned tho kiss,
Which I am sure was right,
Oh! Claud, why should you worry
When you aro out of sight.
Oh, Charlie, I know you llvo
In far away North Bond,
And if you, had tho kissing to do
It would havo boon a bitter end.
Why bother Jack and Roso to death
Of things that you know not?
If left to you I'm almost sure
Bert would not havo been on tho
spot.
Now Anson, dear, what's that I hear
Of quitting on tho squnro?
You wouldn't toll Jack three kisses
at a tlmo
Would Blmply bo sublime;
Oh, yes you would, you've- had your
shuro
In tho good old winter time.
Now, Will, what makes you talk
Of tho tracks Jnckey would mako
l or you know wo would never balk
All for somo Roses' sake.

Twenty cent eggs, perhaps less,
aro the possibilities which tho future
holds In store for tho Coos Bay mar
ket.. This drop of ton cents under
tho present retail price is not unus
ual at this period of tho year. As a
well known groceryman explained it
this morning this Is tho most fruitful
season for tho Coqulllo river valley
and Coos. Bay country hens. Tho
moderating of tho weather after tho
soverlty of tho winter months fills
them to effervescing with a patriotic
ambition to do something for their
country. And, being unable, liko
their more fortunate sisters, to work
off this zealousncss In civic improve
ments and literary culture, they vent
It In eggs. Even now the egg market
is weakening and local grocerymen
aro expecting prices to hit the down
ward grade at any moment.
An unusually fine supply of young
spring chickens was noted In somo
of tho meat markets this morning.
This poultry, dressed, retails for
from 23 to 25 cents a pound.
