Newspaper Advertising.
A newspaper may boom a town
through its news and editorial col
umns. It may wrlto Items co
stantly about crops, tell of tho
enormous potatoes, apples, cabbages
and so forth, grown in Its neighbor
hood, but when nil Is said and done
it is the amount of advertising that
appears in a paper that appeals to
the investor. To him It is tho ad
vertising that measures the bus-
iness done in towns. It is tho pulso"
that he feels to see if the different
businesses aro prospering. Ho
knows very well that if the local I
merchants advertise freolv there
must bo a prospect of a cood conn-
try to draw trade from, or they
couldn't afford to do so. Merchants
may never have looked at It in this
light, but every thinking man will
readily agree with us that when he
increases tho size of his ad. ho ,8.

AT THE HOTELS
X
It was about time for tho Blanco
bus to start for the station to citch
the morning overland for Coquille,
Myrtle Point and way ports on tho
river.
"I see," said "Buckshot," "whore
they've captured a crazy man in
Uoseburg. Made an awful rumpus
before they caught him. Went to
liis sister's house, took a lot of mon
ey, then chased her around the coun
try." "What would you do Buck if you
had got that fellow in your bus?"
asked a bystander.
"Oh, I don't know. Guess wo
could 'ave handled him. I've had
worse tin that before this. Remem
ber that fellow Landis. Killed a fol
low for ?S0 down near Coquille about
three year' ago. Well I've had hlin
in tho bus. Ho'd have to fix up
pretty good for me not to pick him
out. You know he got away and
they've never seen nor heard tell of
him since. Yes I'vo hauled somo
pretty tough ones in the bus. Soma
of 'em I didn't know were tough till
afterwards and some had the brace
lets on when they got on. You can't
never tell whose rldln' with you All
aboard here, all aboard!"
For the past several days business
has been steadily on the upward
trend at Marshfleld hotels. Thd reg
isters have been filled as completely
as though every day had been a
steamer day. This Increase in tho
hostelry line is attributed by tho ho
tel men to the fact that money con
ditions have eased up allowing tho
wholesalers to depart from the policy
of retrenchment which thoy were
forcer to adopt for a time. As a con
sequence traveling representatives
are again making tours of tha coast
states. Again the far reaching effects
of the rebound after tho late plump
have diverted Into countless chan
nels and this too brings out another
class of travel.

weather of the past few days. The
workmen are making substantial
progress on the erection of tho out
side walls and the Interior Is going
forward as well.
Business Slack Coos Bay owners
of boats for charter express them
selves as a trifle dlssatisfled with the
business at present. Tho captains
say thero haB been little demand for
boats for somo time. This is partly
attributed to the rainy weather which
puts a stop to any plans for beach,
parties, etc.
Boats on Market Captain Tom
Holland, owner of the Eagle and tho
Bird, is now on tho market with his
two speedy boats. Tho captain says
ho Is going to retire from the strenu
ousity entailed by boat Hfo on Coos
Bay and recuperato for a year. Both
tho Eagle and tho Bird are well
known boats on the bay and have
done faithful service In tho passen
ger line between North Bend and
Marshfleld.
Steamer Intelligence The Broak
wator will leavo Portland tonight and
is duo in this port Friday morning.
Both tho Plant, San Francisco, and
tho Alliance, Portland, which were
due In this morning aro lato in ar
riving. Tho Alliance was probably
delayed by reason of tho recent heavy
winds which have been blowing up
the coast, but this cause should havo
put tho Plant Into Coos Bay early
this morning. Thoro Is no cause for
delay at tho bar as it was roported
his morning to bo very smooth.
Ladies Aro Heroines Detailed re
ports from tho flro which destroyed
ho bunkalation on Stoven Roger's
place on South Cpos River place Mrs.
Prey and Lea Roger3, daughter ot
Frank Rogers, in tho class of hero
ines, Tho ladles were tho only per
sons, jn tho vicinity of tho flro when.
t occurred. Tho bunkalation Is but
n few yards from tho resldenco of
Stovon Rogers and it was in immi
nent danger. Tho ladles removed a
heavy piano and practically all tho
furnlturo in tho houso and then
opened tho barn doors letting CO
head of cattle out.
