GOOD EVEXIXG.
Calm soul of all things, make it
mine
To feel, amid tho city's jar,
That there abides a peace of
thine
Man did not make and cannot
mar!
Tho will to neither strive nor
cry,
The power to feel with others
give!
Calm, calm be more, nor let me
die
Before I havo begun to live.

Of Thinking Glad.
Never mind a change of scene
Try a change of thinking.
What if things scorns sordid, mean,
What's tho use of blinking?
Lifo's not always storm and clouds,
Somewhere stars are shining.
think your joys out loud,
Silence all repining.
By degrees, by thinking light,
Thinking glad and sweetly,
You'll escapo tho stress of night,
Worry gone completely.
Get tho habit looking for
Sunbeams pirouetting,
Tapping gayly at your door
Surest euro for fretting.
Needn't fool yourself at all,
For thoro's no denying
E'en above a prison wall
Songbirds are a-fiylng.
Whoreforo hearken to tho song,
Nover mind tho prison,
And you'll find your soul ere long
Unto freedom risen.

Nearing Tho End.
Joe Lincoln, whoso Cape Cod folks
aro well-known characters, recently
attended a lecture. When asked how
he liked it, he related this littlestory:
A stranger entered a church in the
middle of the sermon and seated him
self In the back pew. After a while
he began to fidget. Leaning over to
the white-haired man at his side, evi
dently an old member of the congreg
ation, he whispered:
"How long has ho been preach
ing?" "Thirty or forty years, I think,"
the old man answered. "I don't know
exactly."
"I'll stay then," decided the
stranger. "Ho must be nearly done."
Everybody's Magazine.
Her Reciie.
A lady famed for her skill in cook
ing was entertaining a number of her
friends at tea. Everything on tho
table was much admired, but tho ex
cellence of the sponge cako was es
pecially the subject of remark.
"Oh!" exclaimed one of the guests,
"It Is so beautifully soft and light!
Do tell me where you got the recipe."
"I am very Klad," replied tho host
ess, "that you find it so soft and light.
I made it out of my own head." Ill
ustrated Bits.
Yo can't cash your neighbor's suc
cess, and If it has n legitimate found
ation you can't damage it by knock
ing. Whenever you give another follow
the best of it, without its costing you
anything, you havo made a good in
vestment. When a woman forgives her erring
husband sho is applauded, but when
n man forgives an erring wife ho Is
laughed at.
Tho man who Is always saying of
his friend, "Of course, ho has his
faults," seldom realizes that he him
self has his faults.
Ono of the consolations of widow
hood, which fow women admit even
to themselves, Is thnt after a husband
is dead no other woman can chase
him.
Bocauso people apparently have nil
