that only ten days notice Is allowed
from January 13 in which to pay tho
tax. Under tho now city laws there
is a fine of from ?5 to $50 liable
against owners who have not either
paid tho dog tax, or disposed of tho
dog by sending hm painlessly to
tho dog's heaven. .

Bout on January 2.". Bert Peter
son, the local exponent of the manly
art of self defense, and "Montana
Kid," a heavyweight from tho min
ing regions of Butte and vicinity, will
box a ten-round bout in tho skating
rink in Marshfleld on the evening of
January 25. Peterson Is training In
Marshfleld, while tho Kid is traling
in North Bend. Tho bout is at catch
woights, and Peterson is nearly 20
pounds lighter than the Kid, being
about 180 pounds. Both men are
training diligently each day and the
contest promises to be decidedly In
teresting.

Seek Information at Portland.- A
number of newcomers to Coos Bay
state that It would bo a great con
venience to have booklets pertain
ing to this district distributed at
some point in Portland, where new
comers from tho east would be able
to find out about this country. One
arrival on tho Alliance says that ho
could find out nothing about Coos
Bay by enquiry, so he came down to
see tho plaoe for himself. It is ex
pected that Secretary Lyon will make
some arrangement for distribution of
the booklets on his present visit to
Portland.

Goodrum received an ominus, oblong
packago in tho postoffice from some
person In Marshfleld yesterday noon.
It looked so deadly that he would
not open It beforo friends on tho.
street, but insisted that tho joke be
discovered in his storo where tho
laughter would not draw so much at
tention. Some friends kindly openpd
it for him in the store and found a
"coon" doll rigged up like his old
"mammy" down In Mississippi. He
Bald tho sight of it made him home
sick and ho pinned it on tho wall.
This is the second coon doll which ho
has received in a few weeks, and ho
is mystified as to tho sender.

a visitor in Marshfleld Wednesday.
DR. M'CORMAC visited Coqulllo and
vicinity Wednesday morning on a
professional visit. '

were mado happy Tuesday by the
advent of a baby girl.
F. S. DOW, local agent of the Plant,
who has been in San Francisco for
a couple of weeks, will return on
tho 'Frisco steamer tomorrow.
SAMUEL D. MAGNES, of Magnes &
Matson, left Wednesday for Sau
Francisco after an extended so
journ in Marshfleld looking after
his business intorests hero.
FRED PASLEY, who has been In San
Francisco for tho past four month,
will return to Marshfleld on tho
steamship Plant tomorrow morn
ing, according to a- wire from F. S.
Dow. who is in 'Frisco.
