at put by the military department in
rpoyition to figure on the plans and

Bnntor Fulton that this dredgo was
ic result of special lnhors with con
fess on behalf of Coos Bay and there
no doubt whatever that the claim
true. But If it is to be used on

According to tho terms of the con
tract the successful bidder must have
the vessel completed and ready for
service In eight months. She will be
equipped with powerful machinery
and will be one of the most service
able dredges on the coast. An end
less amount of work has been laid
out for tho craft at Coos Bay, Tilla
mook, Grays Harbor and at other
points in Oregon and Washington.

Tho manner in which Coos Bay has
been Ignored in tho matter, since tho
proposition originated on the bay,
has caused considerable Indignation
among local people. Tho latter be
lieve that It would have been more
foaslblo to havo tho body of tho
dredgo constructed hero and tho ma
chinrey could havo been shipped.
It would also havo proven to out
siders that Coos Bay can do some
thing in tho construction lino her
self. S
Since the dredgo Is being built at
Portland, It is folt that Coos Bay's
chances to over securo tho use of tho
dredgo nt an early date will not be
probable.
It is believed that the dredgo will
havo cleaned out the Columbia river
from Astoria to Portland, and all tho
small harbors within reach of that
river, beforo being brought to Coos
Bay, tho southernmost port of both
Washington and Orogon. Had
the dredgo been built at this port,
Coos Bay would havo had tho first
uko of It, which appears altogether
lmprobablo nt present.

SInco tho above was placed in typo
it has been learned that with highly
coinmondablo. public enterprise, L. J.
Simpson has not yot given up the
plan for having this dredgo built on
Coos Bay. As soon as ho learned
that the Portland Iron Works wns
tho successful bidder ho Immediately
entorcd Into correspondence with
thorn making overtures for tho con
struction of tho drodgo on Coos Bay
and offering concessions tljnt would
be advantageous to tho Portland
Arm to havo tho work dono at this
point. As the contract lias not beon
olosod by the government thero havo
been no developments along this
new line of effort.
What care I for the lees of life
When I havo drunk the wine?
How should I take the grass to wife,
When sweet Red Rose is mine?
Or, having danced the saraband .
Within the palaco gate,
And bent above the young queen's
hands
In stolen tete-a-tete.
How should I stoon to meaner joy.
Carousing at the inn
A barmaid for my vulgar toy,
A heartache for my sin?
Nav standing at the nalace gate,
s any beggar might,
t II sing my love song as I wait
into tho lonely night
I'eirhaiuv an echo of my voice
May find its way within,
And help her to some queenly choice
Where elee a doubt has beon.
Whlie in some lull of music there,
A memory may rise
Of kisses on her royal hair,
And Love's lost "Paradise.

"That was a foolish discussion
about the gender of tho Mllllcoma
club," remarked the Scholar as ho
took his scat in the Poet's Corner.
I am surprised that two such
erudite delvers In ancient lore as
Jack Flanagan and Claude Nasburg
should engage in it. Now if they
hail only barkened back to the days
when they wrestled with Greek
verbs and Latin declensions they
would have quickly realized that the
word "Mllllcoma" is of undoubted
Greek derivation. It is formed of
tho two words Mil or Mel, mean
ing "honey" and the other greek
word, Koma or Coma meaning
"rest." There you have It "Swect
rost" and a very appropriate name
It Is, too, for a club "sweet-rest."
"Well, I should say so," remarked
Bill Lawlor, aa he threw himself
down on a luxurious settee to In
dulge In "sweet rest."
Thereupon the meeting elected the
Scholar to the position of Club His
torian and adjourned to the Goldlo
room.
