Enquiring for Coal. Numerous
enquiries from eastern people re
garding the coal deposits of C003
county are being received at tho
chamber of commerce the past few
days, and it is quite evident that
this section Is becoming, famous all
over tho United States for the varie
ty and quality of its resources. Most
of tho enquiries for coal are from
Pennsylvania and Kansas people,
who are asking for samples of tho
deposits here, and tho possible quan
tities available for investment.
Steamer captains running Into this
port from Portland and Frisco say
that tho Coos county coal is becom
ing known as tho finest quality to
be found on the coast, and It is evi
dent that tho news is traveling fast
all over tho country. Indications at
present arc that tho country will
bo overrun with coal investors and
prospectors with tho opening up of
spring, while great activity is al
ready being shown by the people of
this district in opening up various
properties.
"Ye hewers of wood ye drawers of
water" ye sons and daughters of toll,
ye sons and daughters of rest; all
listen! McArthur's Lotion for the
hands heals chaps, calouses, smoothes
the skin and leaves the hands soft,
pliable and white. Bo convinced by
buying a 25c bottle. Remember it is
put up only by McArthur the ' Pre
scription Druggist.
Receives Cut-Making Machin
Roy Lawhorne has received a fine
chalk plate machine for tho making
of cuts from drawings, which he ord
ered from St. Louis several weeks
ago, the shipment coming in on tho
Alliance. Tho plant is probably the
only one for making cuts outside of
Portland, and this well known local
artist will bo able to make pictures
ready to print without sending away
for them.
Alliance Leaves Today The
steamer Alliance, which left her dock
yesterday at noon to go over the bar
to Portland, found that the surf was
so heavy at tho mouth of tho harbor
that she returned to her wharf In this
city and left this afternoon at 2
o'clock to try it again. The bar was
unusually rough yesterday from tho
effects of the heavy ocean winds, and
the Delhi was pretty roughly handled
by the seas.
Have Handsome Wood Duck Tho
"Gunnery" has had on exhibition In
Its front window a very handsome
specimen of tho wood duck found in
part of Oregon. Tho bird was caught
by George Beale, of Coos River after
being slightly wounded In ono wing.
Il has been on exhibition In tho stc-re
for some time and is aro .sin.; grn-.i

cHy and others, the marvolcu&ly
beautiful coloring being liifo a utnl of
the tropics.

Feels Like Spring New arrivals
on Coos Bay were treated to a sam
ple of the kind of weather produced
In this section today, when "Old Sol"
shone brighter than ho has done for
many a day. Tho air was like that of
spring and a number of citizens felt
the spring fever in their systems.
The bay was like a sheet of glass
and tho bright sunlight enabled those
who love sunshine a chance to bask
in tho warm rays, which produced a
sensation of ecstacy and pleasure in
tho mere fact of being alive. Tho
green grass and tho landscape of
green trees made It appear Hko a
bright summer day.
Hold Directors Meeting Tho di
rectors of tho German-American
Hospital association hold a meeting
of tho organization In Its offices In
this city last night and attended to
routino matters. Drs. Gale, Bertie,
Temple, Smith and Raymond attend
ed the meeting, which was later ad
journed subject to a special call.
This organization has beon extending
Its branches to cover practically all
tho county during tho past month.
It has branch offices In Myrtle Point,
Coqulllo and Bandon, and will build
n modern hospital In tho latter place
to attend to its patients in that sec
tion of tho country. Hayos Temple,
of North Bond, Is general manager
of tho concern, while Mr. Raymond is
tho local manager.

will play for two nights. It will then
go to Bandon and Myrtle Point for a
couplo of nights at each placo an I
will return to this city about tho
flfteonth of tho month. It will play
In North Bend aud Marshfield for
two or threo days until tho Break
water makes tho trip aftor this
week's arrival. Tho show playel

vious oveninga. Tho skits were
funny and well oporatod upon, Har
court doing his usual humorous

wero excellent and tho entire per
formance was -greatly enjoyed by a
largo audience.

Want to Boost Coos. The cham
ber of commerce has received a
letter from the Harriman system of
ficials asking for 15,000 of tho hand
some pamphlets recently secured by
tho local chamber. Tho railroad de
sires to place tho booklots In all Its
eastern offices so that people en
quiring about tho west and seeking
information in an attractive form
may be gratified. Tho booklets have
aroused great interest lVom thoir
beautiful appearance and the pict
ures and solid matter they contain.
Tho railroad people have been struck
with tho appearance of the book, and
realizing that they .will bring thous
ands to tho west are anxious to have
tho privilege of carrying them at
so much per. Tho chamber of com
merce will let tho road have a good
"bunch" of the booklets, but not a
full fifteen thousand.
Whistle Is a Success. The huge)
siren whistle which will let the fire
men of Marshfield know when there
is a blaze, was given a trial last
night and it was undoubtedly a suc
cess. It could bo heard Hi all parts
of the city and then some. Tho
whlstlo started In a low monotone
and then soared Into the highest and
loudest of sopranos, descending to
unutterable basso and repeating tho
performance until It was certain that
tho slron would not fall when called
upon to do Its duty. That the whistle
may be heard some dlstanco away Is
certain, and a visitor In tho city of
Bandon said that tho pcoplo of that
burg heard it, and that it sounded
like an Immense long distance sigh
for a better mall service. E. K.
Jones officiated at at tho christening
of tho new sound creator by pulling
tho throttlo that awakened the very
hills.
BIG BARGAIN RUSH
AT MARSHFIELD STORE
Merchant Bros. Unablo to Accommo

Another evidennco of the rapid
strides that Marshfield Is making
toward motropolltanlsm was evi

resembled a bargain salo in a city
department storo) Tho entire sales
forco was unablo to wait on tho

of the greatest bargain days over of
fered tho peoplo on Coos Bay.
"Wo wish to apologlzo," remarked
tho manager, "for not being bettor
