COAL HURXIXG
i
Coos Day coal Is coming more and
more Into demand and now that
j'ortland has discovered that It Is of
-a3 good quality as any boat or car
brings to that port, It Is a certainty
that a much larger business will bo
done In that line In 1908 (presiden
tial year) than In any othor pre
owling year. Coos Bay makes reg
ular weekly shipments of coal to
(Portland and San Francisco and, no
matter what the state of the lumber
market, coal will' bo In great demand
3n good times and In hard times.
The Oregonlan of the second In
stant contnlns the following editorial
comment:
"Tho Southern Pacific will place
another steamer on tho Coos Bay
ran, and expects to Increase materi
ally tho business between Portland
and Coo3 Bay ports by bringing full
cargons of coal to Portland, return
ing with general cargo from this city.
Coal :it the present time is the most
tmpo. Lint staple nrodrceil In Coos
Hay, i'ud, as this port has need of
tl-o li.fi In steadily Increasing quan
tities, establishment of a frequent
scrvit c will bo of mutual benefit to
Ttiolli ports. The Coos Bay coal is
said to be equal to any othor grade
brought to Portland, and tho prefer
ence to which articles of homo pro
duction are always entitled should bo
eliown it."

EDITOR TIMES: I was pleased
to read recently In the columns of
your paper an article calling attention
to the tobacco evil among the young
boys of Maishlleld. It may bo news
to many of your readers to know that
It is not only unlawful to sell tobacco
to minors but It Is also unlawful for
them to smoke In public. The fol
lowing are quotations from tho Ore
gon code In reference to this subject:
Unlawful to Furnish Minor Tobacco
Without Guardian's Consent.
Section 1980 of the code of Ore
gon provides that:
"It shall be unlawful to sell, bar
ter, trade, give or in any 'manner
furnish to any minor under the ago
of eighteen years, any tobacco, cigars,
or cigarettes in any form, or any
compound in which any tobacco
forms a component, without the writ
ten consent or order of such minor's
parent or guardian; and when such
minor has no parent or guardian,
then in that case consent may be giv
en by the county court, setting for
the transaction of county business,
upon proper application in the coun
ty in which said minor may have his
residence.
Any person violating the provisions
of this act shall, upon conviction, bo
fined In any sum not less than five
dollars nor more than fifty dollars."
Unlawful for Minor to Smoke in Pub
lic. Section 19S1 makes the following
provision: "It shall be unlawful for
any minor under the age of eighteen
years to smono In any cmfwyphr
years to smoke or In any way use any
cigar, cigarette, or tobacco in any
form whatsoever In any public high
way, street, place, square or resort.
Any minor violating the provisions
of this act shall, upon conviction, be
fined In any sum not less than ono
nor more than ten dallars, or by im
prisonment at tho option of the court,
for two days for each offence."
Thus It will bo seen that It is not
only unlawful to sell tobacco to boys
but It Is also a violation of the law
for boys to use It in public. I think
you might do something to abate this
evil by giving publicity to these facts
In your paper.
