at North Bend tomorrow Thursday)
night, when about fifty members of
the Marshfield M. W. A., Camp No.

Bend. Quite a number from Co
qullle will also attend the meeting.
Gale Strikes Harbor. Although
no storm warning has been received
from the weather man at Portland,
there Is evidently a tierce gale blow
ing outside the bay, from the south.
Tho boats In the harbor were rocked
about in a manner which made it
appear like "the good old summer
time" for awhile this afternoon, and
the waves ran high enough to make
tho water interesting to spectators,
but a nuisance to those operating the
light launches on tho bay.

Flyer took a large raft of ties across
the bay yesterday afternoon for log
ging road construction up tho Coos
River. Ties are being shipped in
almost every direction during the
past two weeks and the preparations
for the establishment of lumber
camps Is progressing rapidly for

Committee Visits Court A com
mittee from the chamber of com
merce visited the county court this
morning and announced the result of
its efforts to that body regarding the
securing of slips for the ferry ser
vice to be sustained by the county.
A boat slip has been secured in East
Marshfield, and the city council last
night granted the use of tho foot of
W street for the local terminus.
Coos Bay Good Eiioiig'.i In a note
to the business office of The Tiriies,
G. W. Temple, formerly of North
Bend, writes from New Orleans to say
that he is about to start for Kansas
City and from there thence to Spo
kane, Seattle and Portland. He adds
a postscript to his letter in which he
says: "Coos Bay is good enough
for me."
Will Seek Fortune C. R. Olson,
W. W. Woodward and Hugo Lung
wetz, a trio ' of enterprising
young men who arrived on tho Alli
ance, from Minneapolis, by way of
Portland on tho boat's last trip.
They were engaged to work in tho
C. A. Smith Lumber Company's big
mill and will start In to master tho
timber business and lay tho founda
tion for future success and wealth.
Regarding County Roads. As tho
result of the visit to the county court
at Coqullle today of a commltteo
from the chamber of commerce, tho
court decided to give Supervisor
Harry of the Canyon district mora
men to keep the roads in good repair.
Mr. Harry claimed before the court
that the roads are as goqd, if not
better, than they have boon In winter
in any previous year, and that tho
contention of the mail carrier, Fent
on, that the roads aro not as good,
is without foundation. From the re
sult of the visit to the court, Secre
tary Lyon has summed up reasons for
the poor mail service for December,
during which tho mall was late every
day, as follows: Jaded horses, light
wagons breaking, Innofflcient help
and lack of organization on the part
of employes on the stages.
Will Arrest Many It Is probable
that about eighteen citizens of the
city will be arrested this afternoon
for not complying with tho city laws
in regard to providing brick chimneys
on their residences, instead of the
terra cotta structures which aro in
use. Notice was given to tho guilty
parties some time since and tho local
police have been ordered to arrest all
those who have not complied with tho
buildnlg laws In this respect.
Mall Was Recovered Tho mail
sacks which fell' over a cliff with the
horso carrying them along Brews
ter's grade a few days ago on tho
line between hero nnd Roseburg,
were recovered and brought to
Marshfield Tuesday. It has devel
oped that the flrst report of theui
falling into the river was erroneous,
tho horso and pack having dropped
into a canyon. While tho mall was
recovered the poor old horse remains
whero he fell, having boon fatally
hurt in the tumble.

Ask Appropriations. J. T. Hall
attended the county court which is
In session at Coqullle, this morning,
on behalf of the citizens of North
Inlet, who aro asking a county ap
propriation of $2,700 to complete tho
building of the canal up the inlet
which will open up a tract of dairy
ing land amounting to over G40
acres. The cost of the whole work
will bo $19,000 of which the land
owners and tho Simpson Lumber
company have paid the largest part.
Tho county has appropriated $2,000
toward tho work, but $5,000 is need
ed to complete it and efforts are be
ing mado to secure the amount. Tho
cost to the county in this important
project is only 25 cents on the dollar.
Tho portion completed Is about two
miles in length and there is yet about
a mllo and a half to be finished in
order that the ranchers along tho In
let can get their products to market.
Holding County Court Judge
Hall Is in Coquillo where ho is pro-
siding at tho session of tho county
court which has been in session for
tho past, two days. Improvements
planned for tho road and waterways interesting fact in regard to the fruit

Visitors Are Amazed One feature
of life In Coos County which Is amaz
ing visitors and newcomers to this
section Is the amount of farm truck
which is shipped into this section,
where practically anything can bo
grown that is raised anywhere else on
the coast. Each boat from Portland
brings considerable cabbage, potatoes
and other farm produce, which can
bo raised here more successfully than
in the farming districts around Port
land. This Is a featuro which 13
also pleasing newcomers who aro tak
ing up fruit nnd farm lands, because
It proves conclusively to them that
there Is a big market hero awaiting
the result of the efforts at ranching.
Delhi This Afternoon The steam
er Delhi arrived off tho bar about
noon today and camo into the harbor
this afternoon, tying up at North
Bend for a short timo boforo shift
ing to her dock at Marshflold whero
she discharged passengers and
freight late in tho afternoon.
Still Shipping Apples About fifty
boxes of apples from Coos County
will be shipped on tho Alliance to
Portland today. Mr. Bishop, tho lo
cal agent for shippers, Is showing
great Interest in the fruit possibili
ties of this district, and is sending
Coos apples to many distant points,
thereby advertising this section as
excellent for applo production. An
part of tho court's time, and it is
probable that somo good work will bo
accomplished at tho meeting. Sev
eral of tho local lawyers havo been
In attendanco nt tho court, most of
them going down on tho morning
train and returning at rioon.
Want Inlet Dredge A commltteo
waited upon tho county court at Co
qullle today in an ondeavor to se
cure somo means of having tho wat
erways of tho county dredged for tho
uso of boats Instoad of Improving tho
county highways whoro n good water
sorvico might bo malntafned. JCjto
object Is to socuro a dredgo with
otw:, Keov tofc?nwiu3rf wsl
various miots cionr for passongor
and small freight boats. It has been
land brings families from tho Hood
River district, who aro taking up tho
fruit ranches or Investigating tho
Hold hero. Since tho applo exhibit
In Portland from tho county wn3
shown, tho results havo been mora
than flattering to tho district, and
tho people of tho famous Hood River
district havo been tho first to realizo
tho possibilities of this district In tho
fruit growing line. That they aro
taking ndvantago of tho Hold Is evi
dent from tho largo numbor of people
moving Into tho tho county from tho
Hood River district.
