$1,000,000 IMPROVEMENTS
IN ONE YEAR ON COOS BAY
190
Yesterday was tho last day of the
year 1907. For Coos Bay It has ne-n
ovontful nnd Is In every way the
most prosperous In Its history. U Is
silso prophetic and what It has fur
nished must bo, In tho order and na
ture of things, fulfilled. What has
been accomplished Is not apparent
to one who was no famlallar with
conditions In 1900 but to those who
aw tho city In tho summer of that
year and havo witnessed Its growth
since tho Inst Now Year's day, Marm
Uleld Is almost a miracle. It has
watlsfled tho most glowing expecta
tions of Its most sanguine friends.
That this has been and Is duo in 'i

especial concern of tho people of
Coos Day cities has not received much
practical attention In 1907 but It Is
believed that with a little activity
tho people can get the large govern
ment dredge for use In widening
and deepening tho channel and can
havo $25,000 to pay operating ex
penses. This is one of tho fruits of
1907 and tho people have only them
selves to blame If this opportunity
slips away from them. It Is what
1907 devises to 1908. 1908 Is but
an Infant In Its cradle and cannot
take this gift unless the chambers of
commerco act in its behalf. If Coos
Day doesn't want this dredge there
are enough other places on the coast
which do. Tho harbor of Coos Day
should feel that although 1907 has
been without practical and actual
benefit that It has placed 190S In a
position to make memorable Improvements.

ROSEDUKG, Dec. 31. Few Rose
burg people realize that this city is
the headquarters of the largest sub
sidiary branch of tho forestry service
In the UUi.eu States. Apace with the
rapid development of the service, tho
local branch has grown under tho
guidance of Hon. S. C. Dartrum, now
superintendent of the Southern Ore
gon district, until It has reached
business proportions probably great
er than that of the local United
States land office. While the land
office receives a larger number of
visitors, its correspondence and scope
of duty falls far short of equaling
that of the forestry office.
With an office force of seven clerks
Supt. Dartrum is housed in the upper
story of the new Roseburg National
Dank building. He has four offices,
affording a total floor space of about
000 square feet, and this lacks a
good deal of being sufficient for all
There is a public entrance
room, the abstracting and draughting

prints. No offices are better equipped
for their requirements. Supt. Dart

filing system and facilities, also on
tho equipiunet for making blue
prints. Taken as a whole, there
seems to be nothing lacking in the
