Sunday's issue of the Oregonian contained an editorial which shows disposition on the part of the Ore- onlan to be friendly to Coos Bay. his spirit would be productive of treat good both for Portland and the city which commerce requires here. If all Oregon could realize hat Portland is friendly to all parts I the state, It would result in utual benefit. No doubt Portland destined to bo a great city and as reat a city as San Francisco. We elieve it has not retarded San 'rancisco's growth to have Los Au- eles grow up to the south of her. It .vould be a great thing for Portland a city of 75,000 would spring up on os Bay. But the Oregonian con- ders that it Is a question of rall- oads. Everybody will admit that, ut why, we ask 'the Oregonian, can lot the State of Oregon take the initiative and build a road which it an lease to the big companies. Okla- oma proposes to build and operate railroad. As the operation seems o complicated for a state like Ore- 'on. at present, why not build and ase the road? It would help all rogon, and Coos Bay's greatness de- ends, not in the development of a art of Oregon, but all of It. Tho following is a small extract om tne Oregonian s editorial re- rred to: "That Oregon has only ono large wn Is due wholly to slowness of ilroad development in the state. ere should be by this time a city of 5.000 inhabitants on Coos Bay. It useless to expect in these days at cities will be built in places ere there are no means of rapid effective communication. Every dern city is a product of the rall- afl- It Is the superior energy of road effort In the state of Wash- jgton that has carried the develop- ent of that state far beyond the ivelopment and growth of Oregon. o railroads have built Washlng- in's towns and cities and have built the country by affording facilities r tho movement of tho people and 10 transportation of its products. Washington, with an area consider- ly less than that of Oregon, has reo times Oregon's railway mileage. his tells the whole story. The rail- ad combination that controls'Oro- m has neglected tho state, except r the purpose of shutting other rail lad builders out of it." WANT A BS FOR RENT Housekeeping and bedrooms.
