The coldest weather of the present
3cason wa3 recorded on the instru
ments operated by Dr. Mlngus, local
representative of the weather bureau,
this morning nbout 4 o'clock, when
-he thermometer registered 30 de
crees above zero. This was two de
grees colder than on Saturday night
when 32 degrees were observed at
about the same hour.
Quite a heavy frost resulted from
the change in the atmosphere, the
clear sky last night making the cool
ness noticeable. In various parts of
the city the ground was frozen and
a thin Ice formed, which vanished
with the morning sun. The frost was
too light to damage anything, al
though late vegetables In the farming
districts sustained slight freezing.
According to the records kept by
Dr. Mlngus the rainfall since the first
of September has been about the
average, seventeen and three-tenths
Inches being observed. This is four
inches less than last year for the
same period, which was unusually
wet.

Irresponsible Youngsters Said
to Have Destroyed Windows
at Flagstaff.
Home for Vacation Tom Bennett,
son of J. W. Bennett of this city, who
Is attending law school at Leland
Stanford University, is expected
home in a few days, having stated
in a letter to his father that ho will
leave there not later than the 20th.
Mr. Bennett may stay out of school
for the next six months as he is six
months ahead of his class In his
studies.
Plant Left Sunday Tho steamer
Plant which was scheduled to leave
North Bend yesterday morning at
high tide, loft on time with a full
load of passengers and freight. She
had minor repairs to her machinery
finished in time to load coal at tho
bunkers and continued to transfer
her freight with such dispatch that
sho was all ready for departure on
time. It Is probable that sho will
arrive on her next trip on Saturday.

Physicians Flock Together Dr.
DIx and Dr. A. L. Housoworth havo
taken office rooms on tho second
floor of the new Flanagan & Ben
nett Bank building at the corner of
A and Front streets. Three doctors
now have rooms in this building and
in speaking about the way tho rooms
are being taken, Mr. J. W. Bennett
stated that it was likely that tho
third floor of the building would be
finished just as soon as possible. It
had been the Intention to leavo this
floor unfinished until such time that
offico rooms were in demand.
A cold and raw atmosphere per
vaded vaded the room of the Flag
staff public school today as tho result
of most of the windows in that struc
ture being put out of commission by
bullets and stones on Sunday. In
spite of a glowing lire the teacher's
teeth chattered and tho attention of
the pupils wandered as the gentle
winter zephyrs passed across tho
room, hurling paper from desks and
causing enough coughing to mako
outsiders think that they were pass
ing a consumptives' hospital.
Citizens of Flagstaff declare that
the damage was dono by reckless
boys yesterday and that tho outrage
in no way resulted from tho recent
division of the school district, which,
makes Flagstaff on ono side of tho
Isthmus Inlet one district, and tho
community on the other side a sep
arate district. It was reported
around town today that this was tho
cause of tho damage being dono by
to the school, but tho inconsistency
of the procedure docs not niko it
probable.
Tho citizens on tho east side ot
tho inlet recently pleaded for a sep
arate school district because of tho
danger to their children In crossing
the inlet on their way to and from
the school. By mutual agreement
with tho people of Flagstaff this mat
ter was settled, it is said. The peo
ple on he east side propose to build
their own school at once, whilo tho
Flagstaff population will stand by
District No. IS for their own child
ren. When ' tho damage to tho school
house windows was discovered this
morning the report Immediately cir
culated that it was the result of tho
division, but there appears to bo no
truth in the matter, and that tho de
struction was done by irresponsible
youth yesterday.
Myrtle Point's new Hank Tho
Flanagan & Bennett Bank at Myrtle
Point which is a branch of tho local
institution was opened this afternoon
at one o'clock with Mr. Supplo in
charge. Tho money with which to
open up was shipped over by Wells
Fargo this morning. This bank,
while a branch of the local bank,
is altogether n separato institution
and has a paid up capital of ?25,000.
Mr. Bennett, in speaking about tho
oponlng of the new bank, stated that
thero seemed to bo a good field for
a good bank at Myrtle Point and Is
of tho opinion that tho now Institu
tion will meet with favorablo business.

Beaver Is Fast Tho new boat
launched by William Holland's boat
building plant for the Beavur Hill
Coal company, has been given several
trials in the bay since Friday and
sho is showing a rare burst of speed
for a craft of her size. Mr, Holland
had the Beaver dut yestorday aftor
neen looking for a race with tho
boats running between hero and
North Bend causing considerable In
terest for the passengers of thoso
craft. He went after everything In
sight to find out what speed tho
Beaver had and held his own with the
Express, although the new boat Is
only about half the size of the othfr
and has. but 12 horse power. It
appears that there are uo more than
three boats on fne bay which will bo
able to trim thfe Beaver.
