THE NAME.
The total vote which was cast on
the question of naming the proposed
new city on Coos Bay was six hun
dred and thirty-eight. Of these votes
the name Empire received a very
pronounced majority, its vote aggre
gating three hundred and seventy
lve. The vote of Coos Bay, of Coos
)ay and Coos, was ono hundred and
hlrty-slx.
Those who voted were therefore
mostly interested in the name Empire
and in all probability the name Em
pire will be carefully considered by
any committee which may hereafter
be charged with the selection of a
name for the cities on Coos Bay.
Tho proposition to take this vote
was suggested to The Times by inter
ested citizens. IJhey evidently
thought it was time to learn what
Coos Bay people desired. Tho
schools and the families were all ex
pected to take part and the polls were
held open for threo weeks to enable
them to show their sentiment. It is
possible that eight per cent of tho
,ii,Mnn hns voted. The vote is
suggestive, but -It is not decisive.
However, it helps to make it plain
that the hour for consolidation for
any purpose is still remote. The
greater City of Coos Bay Is not yet
In sight. Not that the vote on name
has alone served to show that fact,
but that the few large interests
which are to be directly and imme
idately benefitted are utterly indif
ferent to political action looking to
a union of the cities and cooperative
financial aid through equal taxation
for the harbor. The slow methods
must bo endured, In all likelihood,
until private activity changes them.
It has been said that the future of
the municipalities on Coos Bay will
be decided by ono of two methods.
Tho first of these is Absorption
which means that one city will so far
outstrip the others in wealth, and

population that It will naturally ab
sorb and take In all Its little neigh
bors. The other is Consolidation
which means that all will unite vol
untarily and work cooperatively for
the common good. Tho method of
consolidation is the ono which com
mends itself to progressive minds,
but absorption will accomplish tho
same end. Sooner or later
the great consolidated, expanding
city will demand results and will di
rect Its destiny.

NO MORE DELAY FOR
LAND FRAUD TRIALS
Official Circles Becoming Scandalized
at Continued Inactions.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9. The man
ner in which the Oregon land-fraud
trials have been postponed from time
to timo has come to be regarded in
official circles as a public scandal
which cannot longer bo tolerated.
When the Attorney-General explained
the situation to tho President, he was
instructed Immediately to issue spe
cific Instructions to District Attorney
Brlston, directing him to seo that all
pending land-fraud cases were taken
Into court and tried.
If Heney connot go to Portland to
try the Blnger Hermannn and John
Hall cases, which were set aside at
his request, in order that he might
personally conduct the prosecution,
then Briston must prosecute them,
and if for any reason Brlston falls to
prosecute these and other cases, the
Attorney General has Instructions to
select some one who can and will
prosecute.
Further postponement will not be
tolerated under any circumstances.
It Is no secret In Washington that tho
Departmeu. of Justice Is decidedly
aut of patience wit! both Honey and
Bristol on account of the dilatory
tactics they are said to have pursued
in the Oregon land cases.

Accident.
Charles McCulloch, of tho firm of
Wllley & McCulloch, met with a pain
ful accident last night while going to
his homo in tho southern part of the
city. He was leaving the California
avenue plank road and crossing a
narrow walk near the Gllroy resi
dence when he slipped and fell.
The result of tho fall is a badly
sprained ankle, a broken rib and a
punctured lung, resulting from tno
Jagged ond of tho rib. Dr. Mlngus,
who attended him, says ho will be
laid up for two weeks.
Wanted tho Drink Anyway.
Tommy, after going to bed, became
thirsty, or thought ho did. He called
out:
"Ma I want a drink."
Tho mother's voice answered back:
"Tommy, you go to sleep."
Tommy grunted, turned over and
was silent for ten minutes, then
again:
"Ma, I want a drink."
"Tommy, you go right to sleep,"
was the reply.
Intense silence again for ten min
utes and then:
"Say, ma, I want a drink."
"Tommy, if you don't go right to
sleep I'll come and spank you."
More silence, this time for about
two minutes, and then: ,
"Say, ma, when you como to spank
me won't you bring me a drink?"

H. O. Roberts, a hardware merchant
at No. 103 Western Ave., was dis
trustful of his fellow-men as buslnoss

Roberts claims that he has pros
pered by carrying out his agreement
until he has reached tho last men
tioned figures. Ho says ho has no
desiro to go back to his old mothod
of doing business before ho made tho
agreement and, in fact, would be
afraid to do so, for ho Is certain thnt
his present business would never
havo grown to its prcsnt proportions
if ho had continued along tho old
lines.
Mr. Roberts holds that tho Lord
needs not only preachers and mis
sionaries to help Him carry out His
work, but that Ho needs practical
business men as well.

year," said Mr. Roberts, "and I bal

find it necessary to borrow His mon
ey, a small portion of it, but I always

was His, and although I went broke
I did not complain. I began to pros
per again right away. Things came
my way that I never dreamed about."
