To tho Editor A report is being circu lated on tho stroots of Marshflold to tho effect that I was onco mayor of somo town in tho Willamette val loy and In my official capacity closed all tho Baloons in town. In reply will say that I was never mayor of any town and have novor oven been a candldato for mayor of any town and theroforo novor closed any sa loons as tho report states. It Is n well known fact that tho mayor has no authority to closo saloons. That can bo dono by tho peoplo under tho Initiative and roforondum law. This report has no foundation in fact, but is a promedltatod and ma licious falsehood told for tho pur pose of prejudicing certain voters who would otherwise voto for me. Such methods aro too contemptlblo for anything claiming to be a man to resort to and I bellovo tho voters of this town will set tho seal of dis approval upon such acts in no un certain manner on next Tuesday when they have an opportunity to roto. I offer this brief explanation not that I liavo dono anything that requires an explanation but to call tho peoplo's attention to tho meth ods used by some of tho opposition workers. I. S. It Is tho Intention of tho war depart ment to have a chain of stations to cover practically tho samo territory that tho naval stations do. According to experience, there Is at present no secrecy in tho service of wireless, for messages aro Inter cepted frequently, and many aro tak en by stations wliich do simply a commercial business. In fact, the secret orders of tho navy could bo obtained by civilian stations and dis closed to enemies If tho operators cared to turn them over. Of course tho Becret code of tho navy Is used In all of Its messages, yet codes aro easily translated by experts. Thoro Is a commercial station be ing orected at Astoria, and It Is practically completed. This station Is tho first of a chain that will bo Installed along tho coast. In speaking of tho difficulty of finding some means of avoiding mes sages being taken by stations out side the naval service, Lieut. Parker cited tho fact that a number of small boys In San Francisco had equipped a wireless station and In tercepted navy messages, rio spoka of tho Sitka station as a fine piece of work. This was lately completed W Mr. Hanscom, a civilian in the em ploy of tho navy department. Sir. Hanscom Is tho expert who has chargo of tho construction work ot tho stations, and Is ono of the best experts In tho country. Lieut. Parker will spend one day. at tho Blanco station and then re turn to Marshfleld In season to taW tho Plant for tho south. Ho wiu then Inspect the stations on the Cal ifornia coast. . - 'L- , ff "Vj, " V "V wmomv' BJlLli mm:
