In tho hear ing of tho case of tho United States against tho so-called Tobacco Trust which Is taking placo before Com missioner Shields, whllo it was not established by direct admission that tho United Cigar Stores Company is absolutely controlled by tho Ameri can Touacco company, mucii of the testimony was to tho effect that un usual relations exist between tho two companies. This Ib a big country, and the au thor who writes a good play never gets through taking royalties, it would seem. After it has Its run In the big towns it "tours the provin ces," and sometimes half a dozen dif ferent companies are giving the same show nightly in different states and all of them paying a liberal rakeoff to the lucky playwright. Death by Strangulation. The form was laid at tho feet of tho chief and his nephew, Jose, and while tho Indian braves held her, these two strangled her to death with a hempen cord. Two days of wild orgy were necessary to complete tho ceremony. It Is claimed among tho Creeks that the culprits should no moro be held responsible than a Government hangman who hangs a condemned man. The Indians bellevo tho devil possesses himself of the bodies of people in exactly tho same way as was done in tho days when Jesus walked on tho shores of Lake Galilee and drove tho devil into tho herd of swine of Gennesaret and thence Into tho lake. When nn Indian becomes feverish ho is watched carefully, It being believed tho devil Is trying to possess him. If delirium comes, tho devil wins, and it Is bolloved that If the victim lives ho becomes a raving maniac and a ferocious cannlbnl. Hence the prompt execution for tho safety of this savage soalcty and to relievo tho victim of further sufferings and ag ony. Tho Indians are helpless In case of sickness, and murder Is the roost efllcaclous treatment they know. They say: "Do wo not put our ho"s- es and dogs out of their misery?
