COMMUNICATED. beautiful, euphonious and distinctive name when borno by tho magnificent sheet of water which now proudly wears it, but apply It to a city and It becomes Incorrect, ridiculous and senseless. The cities of Boston, New York and San Francisco might as sensibly and correctly be called Bos ton Bay, New York Bay and San Francisco Bay, as our future city bo called Coos Bay. By the same meth od of reasoning, the city of Erie in Pennsylvania might properly bo called Lake Erie and so on ad in finitum. Namo our consolidated city Coos Bay and generations honco our cultured descendants will shame facedly ask "What manner of men were thoso that lived here in tho olden days, that they called a city a bay?" Even tho aborigines tho un taught children of nature commit ted no such errors in their nomen clature. For the love of humanity leave tho namo Coos Bay where it has been from time lmmememorlal, and where ft rightfully belongs. We must not rob our glorious bay of its heritage, especially when to do so is to commit an absurdity. Next on the list is "Coos." This has met with some opposition be cause of its brevity, but tho tendency of modern times Is toward that end, along all lines. The postal authori ties at Washington frown upon long names for cities, and encourage short ones. Coos should appeal to many. It is "middle ground." It utilizes the namo of tho bay sufficiently to keep the well known region before the public without the objectional and unnecessary appendage. It has been asserted as an argu ment against adopting the namo Coos that no city over became famous whoso namo consisted of but one syllable. This is a prodigious misstatement. Rome, the greatest city the world over saw, has but one syllable, and contains exactly as many letters as Coos. Thebes, Troy and Rhodes, those wonderful Grecian cities that amaze and interest all civllled nations because of their marvelous achieve ments and treasures, are other illus trious examples of one-syllable places. The great historic city of Tyro, in Phoenicia, is still another shinning illustration. Coming down to more modern times wo find Bern In Switzerland, Metz in Germany, Nice, Aix, Pau, Tours and Caen in France, Leith and Perth in Scotland tho other also in Australia York and Leeds in England, Cork in Ire land, Hue in Asia and Fez in Africa. In .our own country we have Lynn in Massachusetts, Butte In Montana and Pierre in South Dakota. Theso cities are all famous, probably all more so than our Coos Bay city will ever be. Examples might bo multiplied, but enough have been mentioned to prove that the fame of a city has no con nection whatever with the length of Its name. Coos is a good name it has Biblical authority for its exist ence, and for "Coos" I unhesitatingly cast my vote. Doubtless there are many who would like a combination of the names Marshfleld, North Bend and Empire. To such the writer would suggest the name "Bendemar" ac cent on the first syllable. The word has a smooth rythm that suggests a cross between tho Per sian and tho Spanish. In conclusion the writer has not Intended to sit In judgment on those who favor the name "Coos Bay" or Coosbay." Tho intention simply Is to express a private opinion In a pub lic manner on a subject that is, or should be, of interest to every man and woman in this vicinity. A. R. S. Editor Times: Tho selection of a suitable namo for the great city that is to bo built upon this peninsula is at present receiving much attention in your columns as well as elsewhere, and a few remarks from an interested reader may therefore be - pardoned. The list of names presented for tho consideration of the public is an im posing and attractive one, though doubtless many others equally good might be suggested. However, up to date few, if any others, have been mentioned. Let us glance at some of thoso published in your valuable paper. First on -the list comes ''Em pire," a good, substantial name with a magic ring and a stately dignity surpassed by few cities' appellatives. Empire has many claims to recogni tion. It is the namo of the first white settlement in tho county. It was the original county-seat, and though "Ichabod" is now written on its walls It was once a prosperous town, full of business and social activities, and It Is endeared to many residents throughout this entire district by its mingled memories of joy and sorrow. If wo call the future city Empire, wo shall assuredly bo neither sorry nor ashamed. Next on the list Is "Coos Bay," or "Coosbay." Why in tho name of common sense does anybody want to tack the word "bay" to a city, and spoil them both? Coos Bay is a Fresh Olympia Oysters and frozen Toke Point Oysters, hardshell clnms, fresh fish, crnbs nntl smoked salmon today. Tho Empire Fish Mnrltct, near Pioneer Grocery. Tho marriage took place on the 19th Instant, at the home of tho bride's aunt, Mrs. M. J. Springer, on San Pablo avenue, Oakland. The bride was formerly Miss Alta Johnstone, a native of Benicia, California, but lately of San Francisco.
