THE HEATHEN' HINDOO.
""When the plant went out of tho
harbor Sunday It carried with It,
standing on its rear deck, a pictur
esque and unusual group. With
White and red turbans, blue or yel
low robes, dusky but very expressive
countenances, largo kindly eyes and
a smile on their lins. they waved red
handkerchiefs as the boat left her
moorings. They did not seem to be
in an unhappy frame of mind and
they did not act as if they were want
ing in courage, or felt themselves en
tirely friendless. These Hindoos had
come to America from a heathen land
Where they had heard of tho charm
ing influence of Christianity upon tho
people of reflned America. They
had heard of the wealth, the educa
tion, the goodness and tolerance of
tho descendants of twenty centuries
of application of that rule which say3
"Do unto others as you would that
others should do unto you." They
were doubtless prepared for a gentle
Und cordial reception from the spirit
ual followers of the meek and lowly
Nazarene. They landed on tho shores
of his Christian Majesty, the King of
England and the Emperor of India,
and found no favor in British Colum
bia's beautiful city of Vancouver.
They went down across tho lino to
tho shores of the llepublic which was
founded as an asylum for "the op-
I pressed of all nations." Thence they
lied from Bellingham from infuriated
mobs to the great city of Seattle.
Here too they were made to feel that
they must move on, and from Seattlo
they went down to Portland, the Rose
of Oregon, where many Chris
tian spires pierce the skies. But
they could not have fared worse un
der the spell of Vadooism or in tho
fanatical land of the Koran and, last
resort of all, they took ship for Coos
Bay, Queen of tho Sunset Sea, tho
Venice of tho West. How inviting
must have been the prospect as the
chip sailed into tho harbor on that
beautiful day! How blue the skies,
how clear and placid the waters, and
how kindly the balmy breezes from
thoir own far off Asia, to make tho
flowers bloom perennially In this fair
land! But even here they wero not
permlttfcd to remain. Vast forests
waved with a derisive display of
superfluous wealth. Great plains
and fertllo slopes stretched away un
used and nonproducing. Veins of
coal glared at them from tho unoccu
pied hillsides. Streets, and wharves
and slowly rising buildings cried to
them aloud for tho stiength of their
arms, but although all nature said
""Como" humanity said "Go." Tho
Christian sabbath about which they
had heard so much rose bright and
clear and with It camo also tho ship
which was to go southward on that
lay. Tho bolls rang from tho church
steeples to call tho worshipers to
prayer. Tho crowds wended their
way with sanctified faces and minds
holy with tho contentment which
comes from consciousness of well-doing,
to thank heaven, perhaps, that
thoy wero not like those strange look
ing heathens. Meanwhile, without
Without resentment, without fear,
calm and confident In n strango land,
the llttlo group of heathens stood
alone ou tho rear deck of tho Plant,
millng, waving good byo with their
hnndUt rchiefs, to tho curious, un
sympathetic crowd which viewed
them from a distance-. "Wo liko your
country," said ono of thorn gontly,
hut you do not like us." So on to
San Trancisco, nnd then whore?
.REATFR SAX FRANCISCO.
A Greater San Francisco Is being
agitated by tho newspaper press of
hoth Snn I' ntlsco and Oakland and
Is coijB.ilpreu with favor by tho other
cities around San Francisco Bay,
The people of that locality hare seen
What Is meant by consolidation ft it
New York. The purpose of consoli
dation around San Francisco Bay is
to protect tho bay, just as has been
proposed for the cities around Coos
Bay. Tho San Francisco Chronlclo
of the 16th Instant contains an edi
torial which will sound familiar to
those who have been reading the edi
torials, addresses and opinions re
cently current In the Coos Bay papers
and commercial bodies. The abso
lute poverty and helplessness of the
cities around Coos Bay Is an all
sufficient reason for getting together.
One of the main difficulties with our
cities, and tho principal ono which
has kept them back, Is that they be
little, underrate and despise them
selves and are doubting their ability
to do anything. San Francisco Bay
cities have never belittled themselves,
but they propose to take almost 250
square miles. Tho proposition to
take in fifty square miles around
Coos Bay means that twenty square
miles of the fifty are water, leaving
in fact, only thirty square miles with
in the actual district. The Chronicle
elltorial Is as follows:
"There Is no question that the
movement of consolidating the popu
lations about this bay Into one politi
cal unit is gaining strength in all the
cities concerned. In such cases tho
people of tho larger city are usually
in favor of "extension." The ques
tion is always as to the wishes of
the surrounding units who must lose
their distinct political Identity. This
is merely a matter of sentiment. The
cities do not in fact, lose their names.
People still live in "Brooklyn," al
though Brooklyn Is part of Greater
New York, just as people still live in
Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda or Saus-
alito whcn thy are politically a part
of San Francisco. The names do not
perish, even officially. When the ter
ritory of a city becomes large, and
especially if certain parts are separ
ated by natural features, conveni
ence requires that there bo distinc
tive names of the various sections,
just as it Is necessary in the subdi
vision of a state. But consolidation
gives to all the rights of a resident of
the consolidated city. In the present
case the sentiment for consolidation
seems to be as strong on one side of
the bay as the other, which guaran
tees the quick appreciation of tho
solid advantages when they como to
be considered.
The San Francisco Real Estate
Board has formally requested the
Chamber of Commerce, as tho senior
commercial organization of this city,
to call a meeting of delegates from
all the commercial and civic organ
izations in the territories proposed to
be consolidated for the purpose of
taking up tho subject for formal con
sideration with tho view, If there is
the expected harmony of sentimelnt,
of forming a permanent organization
for the creation of Greater San Fran
cisco. Tho real estate men say that
It is possible for us to at once create
a city of 800,000 inhabitants which,
acting as a unit and through one
political organization, will be impres
sive to the Imagination and powerful
In state and national affairs. And
this can be done with great pecuniary
and civic advantage to all con
cerned." NOTICE.
Notice is hereby glen that a
caucus of tho legal voters of the
City of Marshfleld will bo held at
the I. O. O. F. hall in said city, on
tho 19th day of November, 190', at
7:30 o'clock P. M., to nominate can
didates for tho office of Mayor for
tho term of two years, and two Coun
cilmen for tho term of threo years,
and a Recorder for a term of ono
year.
