COOS.BAY DAILY TIMES MtiiMiM Oregon THE RAILROAD MERGER. There has long been under con sideration by the most prominent railroad men of" the country a plan to consolidate as far as possiblo all Ahe great railroad systems of the country under one control and man agement. That a favorable oppor tunity to accomplish this stupendous object is being sought Is evidenced by the action of some of the mag nates, like Rockefeller, Hill, Morgan .and the Goulds, who, If the news paper reports are to be credited, are .proposing to establish an all-devour-Jng merger which it to be what Is .called "a holding company." That is to say a company which shall own .and hold tho stocks of all other com panies In just the same manner that jprivato persons own and hold those blocks now. Whether the consolida tion or merger Is to bo like tho iNorthern Securities Company, which -the Supreme Court of the United "States declared invalid and dissolved sib being contrary to the Interstate -commerce law does not appear. It can not be doubted that a mer ger of all railroad corporations In Akls country under no control would be a good thing If tho one control rwere tho right kind. You will ad unit that Rockefeller, Hill, Morgan. anil Gould or any crowd that has Its seat of government In Wall street, would be of the desciptlon which would allow that they are the right vcrowd. Such a merger could operate the railroads quite economically. It could reduce tho operating force, cut down exponses, throttle competition, .force rates, maintain fictitious values and pay bigger dividends to themselves. Ono thing Is plain enough. Wall street's great mastors, .especially the gentleman whom Wall street now worships almost as a saint .-and certainly as a financial saviour J. Plermont Morgan understand buman nature. They believe tho .-country has been brought to Its senbes by tho lecsnt object lesson showing Wall street's financial power. They know that thousands of people have been shaken looso of their holdings nnd aro keen to take thoiso holdings In. Now, after tho castlgatlon which these masters have .given tho too independent public tloy aro ready to see If It is possible to compel them to swnllow tho dose "Which was refused some years ago ji merger of all railroads undor tho control of J. P. Morgan and his peo ple. Harriman has somehow In curred tho enmity of tho people but ilt Is a question whether Hnniman Vyns not tho cat whoso paws woro be- ins used to pull chestnuts out of tho lire. tion of votes. It two ballots are signed by the same voter only one will bo counted. Everybody who reads the Times and can cut a ballot from tho paper Is entitled to vote, for, although the legal voters of tho several cities will finally pass on the question, it Is easy to understand that they will bo guided by sentiment and the men, women and children who aro Interested In this Bay, whether they live hero or not, will help to make that sentiment. No matter where tho reader of tho Times lives he or she should send In a vote. The people of Empire, the people of North Bend, the people of Marshfield and those living around tho Bay are directly interested. It has been decided that tho ballots will be received at this office until No vember 31, and announced in the following Sunday issue. But each day's vote will also be announced to enable readers to determine whether there is any interest In the subject. The names Empire, Coos Bay, Coos bay and City of Coos are on the bal lot, but there is also a blank space left for any voter to write In a name. Some favor, no doubt, Koosbay, some may prefer Mlllicoma, others may have preferences which, when mentioned in the next issue after the name Is voted, may become popular. Tho name Empire has much to rec ommend It, and so also has the namo Coos or even Coos Bay but It Is ex pected that each voter will weigh the arguments In favor of each name. It may also he as well to remember that tho act of consolidating all tho Coos Bay cities into ono will make the name of the greater quite famous. When Whatcom, New Whatcom and Palrhaven consolidated under the name of Bellingham, tho name of Belllngham became known to the whole world and because the several cities could unite and act as one, tho famo of Bellingham has gone every where. So will it be with any namo which has the proper ring to it, which this ballot may show tho peo pie favor. Vote. The Steamer M. F. Presses and printing are predicted to bo passing, and microphones are to take tho place of newspapers and written contracts. Dr. Marago of Paris is photographing tho human volco, and with a powerful magnify ing glass he Is able to read the re cords of a person talking. It Is the belief of certain scientists that these voice photographs eventually will take the place of writing and alpha bets altogether. Stenography, too, would be abolished. Instead of writ ing a letter the sender would talk Into tho microphone, pull out the strip of zigzags when through, and post it. Forgery would be out of the question, for It Is absolutely impossi ble to decoivo tho electric needle, which faithfully records every shade of tone. For books and newspapers, tho Idea is to have a conventional Imitation of zigzags of the various vowels and consonants in tho form of type, which will bo set In lines like ordinary printed matter. Tele- pnono conversations would bo as binding as a written contract today. Tho film would record beyond all ar gument just what was said and who said it, and could bo unrolled after ward and read off, just as the words wero spoken. If tho law of tho fu ture calls for It, a notary could put In his little statement to tho effect that at Ills ond of tho wire Mr. So and So had appeared personally be fore him and was known to him, etc. Tho possibility of sonding messages across tho ocean by cable with tho aid of tho microphono and wet need le also is contemplated as a most ad vantageous possibility. ntnuJtmmmtn:mm:m::ummmt -.$8i?i Everything Electrical at Oregon Electrical Supply Co. 1 g ' 03rew ?pS Bawawaty New O'Connell Blk. amaBtfa8BmBBBBU' ttttmmimttt Now I s The Time THE NAME OF THE CITY. Dr. Henry Mc Cook, tho scientific parson of Phila delphia, allows that If wo think of languago as a vocal medium for con voying thought and emotion from ono Individual to othors, tho bugs and bees may bo said to bo dumb. For Insects havo no true voices or organs of speech, such as belong to articulate speaking men. They also lack tho means of uttering cries characteristic of birds and beasts. But if wo tako languago as simply an understandable medium for ox pressing emotions, insects aro thus ondowod. They oxprosa emotions by bodily gestures.
