' (Oregon Journal.) That James J. Hill is making ef forts to construct a railroad line from Portland to San Francisco was mado certain in tho minds of rail road men with tho arrival In Port land several days ago of R. A. Gra ham, who Is in the Rose City for the purpose of Instituting suit to recover possession of the Coos Bay, Roseburg & Eastern Railway & Navigation company, operating a line of road about 30 miles long between Marsh fleld and Myrtle Point. Mr. Graham lives In New York and was general manager of the Coos Bay road in 1898, when J. D. Spreck els' Bros. & Co. took forceful pos session of the railway with a squad of men armed with Winchester rifles, to satisfy a private debt owing the big sugar man by Graham, amounting to $523,000, duo on a promissory note. Sold to Southern Pacific. Tho road was placed In the hands of a receiver and was finally sold last year to the Southern Pacific rail road. The receiver was discharged last Jtuy and Mr. Graham at once commenced to get busy to gain pos session of tho road. The nature of the action which he will bring is to start a suit either in the United States circuit court or in the state circuit court at Marshfleld for an accounting of the road's con dition and for the restoration of pos session of the line, with all of it" corporate properties. Mr. Graham and his attorneys have not decided in which court to institute proceed ings, tho only reason for taking the suit into tho state courts would be to have the action lie nearer the faefs than they would in the federal court in Portland. Part of Transcontinental Line. Graham contends In defense of his action that he was never given a day in court by Spreckles. Ho claims that the big San Francisco capitalist swooped down on the company's of fice at Marshfleld while he was in New York and drove all of tho office employes out of tho building at the muzzle of Winchesters. He says he realized tho futility of bringing Spreckles to an accounting at that time and waited until now in order to fortify his position. Railroad men look upon Gra ham's proposed action as an attempt on the part of Hill to gain a strong connecting link in a line from Port land to San Francisco. Tho Coos Bay, Roseburg & Eastern Railway & Navigation company extends up to the head of navigation on the Co qulllo river and runs through one of the richest valleys in the country. It Is In reality the small part of a transcontinental system that is con sidered one of tho most feasablo yet broached for the advancement and development of tho Pacific coast. That the line Is one over which tho Hill and Harrlman interests will fight to the lasl ditch is further at tested to by the facts that the com pany is on a paying basis. Another thing which promises a hard fight among tho big Interests Is Graham's dislike for Harrlman and Spreckles. Of the latter, tho forcible seizure of the road is sufficient to show the en mity existing between the two, while Graham Is said to have developed a dislike for the Southern Pacific man for several reasons. An incident of tho Graham-Spreck- els fued Is recalled In the hearing of tho Interstate commerce commission which mado a small investigation on tho Coos Bay lino last spring. Com missioner Lane was listening to the evidence and asked Mr. Graham If ho did not regard Spreckles' Intentions honest. Sir. Graham Is reported to have said to tho capitalist: "Well, he made a noise like an honest man." WANT ADS Rates for want advertising FIvo cents per line. A well-dressed woman took from her pocketbook two pawn tickets. "How do you happen to have doc ments of that kind in your posess sion?" asked a friend. "They belong to me. that's how," replied tho well-dressed woman, se renely. "I pawned several pieces of jewelry when I went away In July, and I haven't got tho things out yet." The friend's face took on an ex pression of mingled sympathy and wonder. "Well," she exclaimed, "you are certainly the last person I would have ever thought of coming down to that. You always seem to have plenty of money." "I didn't pawn tho things because I needed tho money," said tho well dressed woman. "I put them there for safe keeping. For several years I have been storng my furs In a pawn shop during the summer. Since they were so well taken care of there, I concluded to trust tho pawnbroker with my jewelry this season. Last year the warehouse where 1 had the things stored was broken Into, and I lost two rings and a bracelet. A pawnshop is. about the safest place on earth to keep things in. It is hard enough for people to get their own stuff out sometimes, but It almost im possible for anybody else to get it. Also it is cheaper than a safety de posit vault, so far that combination of reasons have become a pawnshop patron." WANTED Teacher with some ex perience, for tho Prosper school. Apply to R. W.
