Hindu, If he Is a menace, does not
mean to be.
There Is nothing on Coos Bay for
these poor, Isolated refugees from
desolation and famine. Thero Is no
need to feel or express any passion
against them. They will go away
again and their unhappy lives will
continue to bo unhappy. Tho Hindu
Is not himself a menace. Tho cor
rupt, selfish, greedy Interests which
have been guilty of bringing them
to this country and which nro ready
to undermine American labor or
destroy American Industry are the
laboring men's enemies. Tho Hin
dus are victims. Violence against
them is cowardly and uncalled for,
and it Is gratifying to feel that the
unions and workingmen generally
realize that skilled labor is in no
danger, and that the Hindu cannot
compete with any form of labor
which Is now active on Coos Bay.

TAINTED COIN LOOKS
GOOD TO P0CATELL0
Boise, Idaho, Nov. 13. Tho city of
Pocatello Is torn asunder by bitter
strife on the saloon question. Some
time ago tho county attorney of Ban
nock County ordered tho sheriff to
closo the red light district, and the
order was compiled with. This ac
tion deprived the city government of
Its principal source of Income, li
censing of these resorts having been
in vogue thero for many years.
In order to retaliate on tho county
an ordinance has now been intro
duced in the city council prohibiting
the sale of intoxicating liquor in Pi
catello and the ordinance has passed
Its first reading. If passed this or
dinance will deprlvo tho county of Its
chief Income. Efforts to compromise
have been unavailing, and members
of the council assert tho ordinanco
will bo passed this week.
Tho county attorney says ho will
remain firm, and that the red light
district has gono for good.

EMPIRE
Considerable agitation has
Indulged in certain quarters with
regard to the name which tho con
solidated city on Coos Bay should
tear. The general opinion was sup
posed to bo favorable to tho name
Coosbay or Coos Bay. It seems,
however, that a large number of
citizens would prefer another name.
They say the bay Is composed of
water and is an arm of the sea,
but that the city is not water and
is not an arm of tho sea but rather
a municipality on that arm. How
nbsiird therefore, it is to call the
ity a bay. But then tho question
comes up what shall be the name of
tho greaV seaport which Is to be?
The name should be euphonious,
suggestive, inspiring and easily re
membered. It should also bo un
usual. Coos without the bay has
been suggested, but few seem to
take very kindly to that.
A large number of the older resi
dents of Marshfleld and North Bend
liavo at one time or another lived in
Empire, well known to fame as Em
pire City. Thy like the name and
It is quite often asserted on the
street and in public places that the
name of tho new city bhould b.e Em
pire. The na:ne is really quite as
well known in the East as Coos Bay.
They say that tho city should bo
Empire and the hay Coos Bay. Em
pire on Coos Bay is a very sounding
aiame. It would bo known every
where as tho Imperial City. It Is
not the purpose of the Times to
adiocato either ono of these names
or the other, but it would like to
know whether tho citizens of tho
peninsular which Coos Bay enfolds
in its watery arms prefer to have
jthls city called Coos Bay or Em
pire or any other name. It will
therefore arrange to take a vote of
all who may bo interested In tho
question as to what name tho voter
prefers. In Sunday's issue will ap
pear a ballot In which will appear
the name Coos Bay, Coos, Coosbay
and Empire and a blank left for tho
voter to write In a name. Ho will
sut out the ballot nnd put a cross
against tho name which ho prefers,
nnd then mall tho same to tho Coos
Bay Times. It Is not merely a
matter of interest to citizens of the
proposed city, but also of tho whole
district nnd of all who read tho
Times. This proposal is to bo made
Jn this manner for tho purpose of
ascertaining tho sentiments of tho
people nnd tho votes will bo received
at tho Times office during tho week
and tho result will bo determined
y count each day, and tho final re
sult announced Sunday, November
twenty-fourth.
THE BANKS
Tho people of Marshfleld were not
disturbed at the announcement that
the banks had decided not to permit
withdrawals by depositors to any
larger amount than $25 per week
during the "holidays." They under
stand that It was merely a move to
prevent money from being taken
away from this locality and shipped
east. Most of the more intelligent
ones recognized this as a measure 01
cooperative protection and expressed
full approval of the action of the
banks. Tho present financial situa
tion Is regarded as the most un
usual, extraordinary and inexplicable
In history. It Is believed to bo un
justifiable and traceable to the ar
bitrary action of New York finan
ciers who have expressed their dis
like of President Roosevelt and have
not hesitated to lay the whole re
sponsibility at his door. Yet every
body knows that Mr. Roosevelt's ex
pressions and acts have been di
rected against "successful dis
honesty." It seems that successful
dishonesty is getting back at Presi
dent Roosevelt.
Yet notwithstanding the facts that
banks have concluded not to allow
withdrawals of cash in greater sums
than $25 per week tho financial sit
uation is Improving throughout the
east. Tho large receipts of gold
from Europe In New York City have
restored confidence In a large mea
sure and the stock markets show an
upward tendency. All that Is neces
sary is to be patient and in a few
days the situation will have cleared
and business will have resumed its
normal condition.
