MARSHFIELD FIREMEX
No more commendahle associa
tion of men will be found In any
Community than those constituting
Volunteer fire companies of the small
least depreciating Its great first
work, It Is profitable to point out Its
great value In helping to make visit
ors to the city feel at home nnd to
Induce them to cast their lot here
and throw their Influence for the up
building of a strong and puro mu
nicipal character. Does this merely
moral work seem below the mission
of tho church? In order that It may
bo successful In tho mission which
belongs to It, tho church must not
despise tho attractions which enable
men to become satisfied with their
surroundings. The social party, the
refreshment social, the conversation
al gatherings, tho games, tho books
and music of tho world must be of
fered to all without discrimination.
Tho saloons do not hesitate to use
them, why should tho church?
BAD BUT SUGGESTIVE
TJho action of the Southern Pa
cific In taking passenger trains num
bers eleven and twelve from the run
between Portland and the south,
while it Is a misfortune for Coos Bay
temporarily tends strongly to accent
uate the Importance of tho coast
line which has long been among the
planned and probable constructions
from the mouth of the Columbia
to San Francisco. These trains have
been taken off because of the almost
prohibitive expense of operating
trains In Cow creek canyon and over
the Siskiyou mountains during the
winter months. Once tho line sur
veyed by the Southern Pacific south
to Coos Bay and thence to Eureka
SAYS DRAINAGE CANAL
WILL NOT LOWER LAKES
Chicago, Nov. 9. Dr. Rudolph
Herlng, of New York, now employed
by tho sanitary district, who has
been Investigating the probable ef
fect on the lake level of an addition
al Inlet to the drainage canal, says It
will not lower the lakes.
The report Is to be made In tho
suit started by the Government re
straining sanitary district commls-
tlonal outlet. The suit was started
on tho ground that an additional ca
nal would lower the level of tho
lakes.
Dr. Herlng says that from tho In
vestigation which ho has mado tho
contention of the Government Is un
founded and from data which ho has
gathered ho will show that by using
Lake Superior as a storage place and
by tho use of tho dams at Sault Ste.
Marie tho Michigan and Huron Lake
sloners from constructing an addl- levols can be maintained.
The Steamer
Cities of the land. While it is true
that they are not called upon as and on to San Francisco Is complet
frequently to face danger as are the ! ed, tho grades which form the ob
stacle to the operation of the line
over the Siskiyou mountains will be
avoided and the great coast line will
be the true highway of commerce.

Veteran and trained firemen of the
large cities who are constantly In
service and are paid for their work,
yet when the occasion does come it
"Ss likely to develop the greatest
danger and require the most ad
"mirable and self sacrificing heroism
to overcome. Marshfleld is not im
Ttnnne from fire and she Is not so well
Constructed that a fire may not re
duce her to ashes. Her volunteer
fire department is certainly entitled
to every encouragement and to make
their work of self-sacrifice and pa
triotic devotion attractive in some
degree, Marshfleld people should
Spare no pains to show their appre
ciation. Such, at least, should be
tho attitude of property owners and
tax payers.
It was stated In the presence of
a representative of the Times the
lather flay that so slight has been the
appreciation of the value of the vol
unteer fireman's services, that on
tormer occasions uie fireman's ualls, are now on exhibition at this store.

'character on tho property owners and
tax payers. In the large cities all
'the people recognize the great value
'Of a fireman's service and the "Fire
man's Ball" is always an event which
o "business man or leader of society
tjares to ignore. It would be a dis--grace.
How much more Impoftant
Is ft that a Fireman's Ball In a com
munity like Marshfleld, where the
'only compensation a fireman gets is
the appreciation of his friends and
sieighuors, should bo made a rousing
financial success. And how much
inoro Important is it that ho should
"bo recognized this year, 1907, than
"3t,wjis last year! For Marshfleld is
igrowlng and tho danger which
threatens is growing. It needs its
'volunteer fireman and should ac
knowledge tho fact.
If tlio volunteer firemen should de
nsldp to have a Fireman's Ball this
"coming Christmas, or at any other
Ttline, they can count on tho Times
to aid them In every possible way.
"We believe tlioy can count on tho

the people do not appreciate them
