THE OltKGOMAX
The Oregonlan of recede, aate con
tains an editorial which Is designed
to rebuke, in part, the newspaper
press of this state, In so far as it has
found fault with the Oregonlan for
what is claimed to be discrimination
rgalnst the sections where the press
is published. Coos Bay is mentioned
as ono of the sections whose press
objects to the Oregonlan's policy.
Let the Oregonlan correct its Im
pression in that respect. The Coos
Uay press has never found fault with
the Oregonlan. It has understood
and understands that the old school
journal which has for many years
led the newspaper profession, on the
Pacific coast north of San Francisco,
has never given any particular
thought to Oregon except so far as
Is could be considered a tender to
Portland. Nor can the Oregonlan be
criticized for that position. It was
&orn to boost Portland. It is sus
tained by Portland and its life de
pends on Portland's supremacy. It
could not be otherwise.
Coos Bay does not complain of the
Oregonlan. It has no more right to
do that than Portland hate a right to
complain of Coos Bay papers. The
Columbia river and its seaport be
long to oue section of this state and
Coos Bay to another. It Is not prob
able that either will help the other
lo any great extent. Portland Is a
Rrcat river port and Is struggling to
maintain twenty-six feet of water In
Its harbor channel, while Coos Bay
is a seaport on the great Pacific
ocean four hundred imiles south of
Puget Sound, two hundred miles
from the mouth of the Columbia,
three hundred miles from Portland
by water, and is in a position waere
a little common sense and a small
expenditure will give It forty feet of
water in its channel and on us bar
so that the greatest of the world's
ships enn reach It. There Is no rea
son why Portland and Coos Bay
should not help each other Port
rand with its present great strength
and Coos Bay with its prospects of
a mighty future. The newspaper
7ress of Coos Bay has no fault to
nd with the Oregonlan.
THE HIGH SCHOOL
As the time draws near Tor the

"Shall Marshfield have a four years'

their minds. Nearly everybody Is
ready now to go and vote for the

body considers it inconceivable, that
Marshfield, a city of five thousand
people. Bhould refuse to establish

squat eiy presented. Nearly every

least progressive, would consider it

rfianio, if tho voters should happen
Ui vote the proposition down. Every

Oregon tho linger of scorn would bo
pointed at Marshlleld.
Just there is tho point of tho pres
ent notation. That tho high school
is a necessity; that it will becomo an
Institution of great Immediate) bene-
t; that no other town of the sko
Marshlleld has neglected to pro-
'ido such a school; that It will ho
burning shame and a disgrace If
.te ychool is voted down, are all
xmcedert. But If tho friends of tho
srhool who nro taxpayers and quail
fed to veto do not attend the elec
tion, those arguments may ho turned
down and that shame and disgrace
may lo folt. Let It bo remembered
that tho women who have property
on which they pay n tax aro all qual
ified to vote. Let them remember

which affects their children. Every
man uho has tnxnblo property in

and bespeaks surely the popularity of

been out just a month and does not
expect to return East for several
