FOXY RABBIT LURES BOGS Carondelet Residents Solve Mystery of Disappearance of Their Canines. GRASS HIDES A QUARRY Jimmy Lends Pursuers to Brink nnd Stands by While They Jump Over. St. Louis, Oct. 19. A wise old jack rabbit that lives in a corn field In the outskirts of Carondelet has lured a dozen dogs to death in the last year. Persons who have seen several of these dogs leap to death say it was always the same old jack rabbit that led thorn on. Their descriptions 01 mm agree that ho is nn unusually large rabbit, with unusually long ears, and the white about his nose and "ears indi cates great ago. There are other rabbits in the field, but they are of ordinary size, and none of them has been seen en ticing a dog to death. Just ns sure as a dog goes to snif fing around in that corn field the old jack rabbit gets within sight of him and invites a chase. They race away across the field, the dog in pursuit, and the rabbit al ways leads the chase straight for an old stone quarry, the sido of which drops straight down, a sheer precipice 140 feet to the bottom. Finish nt Grout Speed. As the rabbit nears tjie quarry ho quickens his snecd, making leaps of wonderful length, until ho Is within a few fet of the edge of the preci pice. When ho is so close that the -ry "ext lap would carrv him over the edge he stons suddenly and qutekly springs nside. There is notMntr unoi the surfnen to indicate to the dog the yawning gulf ahead. The grass grows tall and thick right up to the edge. When the rabbit lumps aside, the dog, unable to check his speed, bounds over the edge and goes tumbling downward, end over end and alights unon the sharp edged rocks at the bottom. Upon that rocky floor the skele tons of 11 docs were found yesterday by Thomas Dalton. sergeant of po lice. In some of the skeletons near ly everv bone had been broken. Clours Up Doi? Mysterv. The discovery of these skeletons clears up a dog mystery that had puzzled many persons in Carondelet. In the lat year a dozen dogs disap peared. Some worn valuable dogs grey hounds, fox terriers and setters. No one could oven surmise what had become of them, except those who lived near the cmarrv and had seen the trap set bv the old rabbit. TIip quarrv is ownpd bv the Itouck inor Bros. Construction Co. Virginia avenue is west of it, about one hundred and fiftv feet from Its edge. Walsh street is just south of It. Unon the north, coming un almost to its edge, is a lame corn field nnd there the rabbit eolonv, led b" the wary old jack rabbit, lives In safety. LOSES HIS MEMORY FOR ONLY A DAY Lake School Teacher's Peculiar Ex perience After nn Ac cident. Silver Lake, Or., Oct. 19. A pe culiar circumstance overtook William Patterson, a school teacher, who has been working with the force of forest guards in this locality for the past few months. He started from camp for Silver Lake, seemingly as well as ho over was. On arriving in town ho put his horse in the stable and went to the hotel, where it was noticed that ho was acting and talking queer ly. An hour after ho arrived in town ho could not remember how or when ho got in, and kept asking repeated ly, "How long have I been in town?" and "What Is tho matter with mo?" He complained that hi? head, his arm and his kneo hurt him, hut could not remember having met with any accident. In tho morning, however, Mr. Pat terson had fully regained his mem ory, and now has a faint recollection of his horso running against or un der a leaning treo with him. A brulso on the knee and the fact that one of his ears had been bleeding bear wit ness that he met with some kind of accident. What took place during tho remainder of tho day after the accident, Mr. Patterson cannot re member, and he says tho whole thing seems like a dream to him. Ho Is now feeling perfectly well. A. H. Eddy for plans and ppecl flcatlons of your new hom. CANDID OPINION GIVEN BY CANNON Speaker Comments on Kind of Man Needed for n Presi dent. Washington, Oct. 19. Joseph G. Cannon, of Illinois, according to an editorial yesterday In tho Now York Sun, which Is antl-admlnlstratlon, a year ago declared with every appear ance of sincerity, not to say excite ment, that what tho country needed above all other things was a chief sxecutivo who would "keep on his own side of the fence, attend to his own business anfl leave tho judicial ind legislative branches free to dis charge their respective duties." Wanning to tho subject and evi dently chafing under a sense of bit ter provocation, ho is said to have added: "Tho Republican party must offer the American people that kind of a president next time, or it had better go out of business." Tho alleged declaration has aroused much Interest here, because It is assumed to be an animadversion on the AVhito House occupant and be cause tho Sun, speaking apparently with authoritative knowledge, de clares tho statement was not Intend ed for publication nor has it even been hinted at In tho newspapers. THOUGHT HIDING, FOUND HANGING Mrs. Charles Cheeks at Last Carries Out Old Threat. Seattle, Wash., Oct. 19. Eliz.v both Ellnoro Cheeks, wife of Charles Cheeks, a musician, hanged herself this morning in the closet of her bedroom in their apartments at Man hattan flats. Death apparently was by strangulation. Cheeks told Detective Frank W. Clark ho believed jealousy was the cause. The woman Is presumed to havo killed herself between 0:30 and 7:30 o'clock this morning. Her bodv was still warm when discovered by her husband at the latter hour as ho returned homo from his work at 515 King street, where ho is em ployed as a piano player. Cheeks said when he opened the bedroom door he did not see his wife in bed and thought she was hiding from him, as she had often done when she heard him coming. Ho threw his coat on tho bed and stepped toward the closet when ho saw the body hancinc from the clothes pole, the cord of her bathrobe around her neck. Cheeks lifted her from tho rope and laid hor on tho bed. He de clared sho was still warm and he thought some life was left. He tried artificial respiration, ho declares, and failing, called some of the other tenants in the flat. Then sho was dead. Cheeks said his wife was ex ceedingly jealous. She had listened to stories told her by other women concerning her husband. Many times, Cheeks said, sho had threat ened to end her life, but he didn't treat the threats seriously. Cheeks declared that aside from her jeal ousy he and his wife were exceeding ly hannv. He further declared none of his acts justified her jealous feel ings.
