Portland, Oct. 15. Bached t.y a $3,000,000 capital; which ho says ho can secure, W. II. Gcrland, if St. LcuL, niissouri, proposes ) g'Vo Portland transportation fault Ijs that will furnish direct coimettlon with tho comuierclal centsrs of Alns k.i and tho orient. The comiianv w'll ho Incorporated within tho next few days and every cent of tho capital stock will bo subscribed In tho east should local money fall to see In ducements In the proposition. Mr, Gorlond came here iour months ago ostensibly for tho pur pbso of looking Into the possibilities of establishing paying stcairishtp lines and he believes Alaska and tho orient offer openings that, have ion,; been overlooked. Especially, so in regard' to Alaska. In his opinion Portland Is admirably situated 'and equipped for taking care of the greater trade of tho. northern coun try and should have no difficulty in securing and retaining tho same for all time. "'I have found Portland inost fa vorally situated for a steamship line to Alaska and can conscientiously recommend it to tho moneyed people associated with me in this" proposi tion. Wo will Incorporate within a month and begin preparations for the establishing of a line Immedi ately thereafter by chartering at least three steamships, each of not less than 0,000 tons carrying capa city. "The company will be known as the Portland Steamship & Naviga tion company and will haye a capital stock of $5,000,000. Not a dollar of this money will have to come from Portland because we have people in the east looking for investments here and there can bo nothing holding out a more promising future. "Our Intention is to charter steam ers for a time, but eventually build vessels of our own and along lines that will prove most suitable for the particular lino of business. An im mense traffic can be worked up be tween this port and the various sections of Alaska and about all that Is needed is a steamboat lino with enough backing to keep it go ing until the people ascertain its permanency. They are not going to hasten to support a lino for a day but a solid proposition here to stay will find all the business it can take care of with tbe boat capacity! hae "Thousands of passengers going' north and. returning, will assist largely in supporting a line, so that it will not have to depend upon freight only but there will be enough produco sent out of here to make tho project a profitable one. As to the oriental business, our plans are to eventually branch out and place largo freight and passenger steamers in commission out of Portland. That however, will be left for develop ment in the future after the Alaska line has been throughly established and gotten into smooth running order. The company will also op erate smaller boats on the Colum bia and its tributaries as feeders to the larger lines.". ROBERT MARSDEN ,COOS BAY AGENT OLD CROW HERMITAGE YELLOWSTONE CANADIAN CLUB JAS. E. A battle royal will be fought out in the wheat pit hntwnon Tmnpq A Pnttftn Jind .T. Ogden Armour acordlng to a report rreeiy circulated toaay among iue brokers on the board of trade. Mr. Patten, with holdings estimated at 15,000,000 bushels, has entered the arena in the rolo of a bull, while Mr. Armour, said to be heavily short, on the market, is playing the part of a bear. The efforts of these two giants to settle their differences are expected to result in lively encounters and furnish excitement in plenty for those who watch tho struggle from the side lines as well as those who are disposed to take sides with the contestants. Evidence that the struggle is to he flerco was had from tho action of ,inc tnAav when Mav wheat slump ed from $1.11 to $1.09, and then jumped back to $1.10 at tne ciosu. Heavy selling by small holders to secure profits furthered tho efforts of the bears to claw prices down. Pit sleuths declare that much of tho selling was traceable to Mr. Armour. The break disconcerted tho bull forces, but Mr. Patten accepted tho challenge and rushed to tho sup port of tho market, forcing such a n,llr.1r rnllv Mint. t.TlO Small SllOrtS, Teddy bears, so to speak, were car ried off their feet.
