FRANZ JOSEF. The critical sickness of the old emperor of Austria Franz Josei absorbs the attention of European potentates. His demise would be ono of the complicating events which place the great powers on the verge of war. It is only because of the confidence and respect which his peo ple have in and for him that the mongrel empire of Central Europe Is held together. Reports which come to this country from time to time chow how slight are the bonds, like ropes of sand, which hold the parts of that distracted empire together. The Hungarian is a very large factor In the union, If that can be called a union which is held together only by the slightest thread of one man's JIfe. But Hungary has always felt restive under the Hapsburg rule. Bohemia is only a little less favora ble to the central government, while Poland would gladly rise against the Austrian domination If only her Prussian and Russian ports could be wrested from their masters. Even Tyrol does not lave the emnlre and waits only thr torch of rebel lion which it Is anticipated will be lighted at the death of the venerable emperor. Whether the demise of Franz Joseph occurs soon or not the Aus trian Empire is sure to be divided when It does occur. But Wllhelm of Germany will not be quiescent "What Russia will do none can say. The latter has no navy, but she has still a powerful army and she mav, Tinder Nicholas, whoso friend Wll lelni pretends to he, unite that armv With Germany against the disaffected Tarts of Austria. As the Austrian empire has only a small navy and scarcely any sea coast worth men tioning, the war will be, If at all. waged on land. What Hungary and Bohemia could do together, of what I'olanrt might be ablo to do with them, Is hard to say for nono can ten what government the revolution ary forces might establish. But It will be remembered that once on a time, revolutionary France, throwing tyn- monarchy to the four winds, de veJaped the mbst astonishing mili tary leader of modern times and forced every contending monarchy in Europe except England, to its knees before France. What a people like those of Hungary, the land of Attllla and Louis Kossuth, of Poland, the land of John SobleskJ, might develop Is ono of the mysteries which can only be solved by war and history. TILLAMOOK AND MARSnFIELT) LIBRARIES. Marshfleld is making very good, prpgress and has a right to expect Tier prosperity to continue. She 1ms bqcn improved by tho liivestment of nearly six hundred thousand dollars pf substantial improvements during !ie six months last passed and there is good reason tp bollovp that her population figures up to D.OOO people, illje Is tp have a fine, up to date hotel, s high school, a now school In South Marshfleld and an addition tp her city hall. All these wore very neces iKiry, Including tho fraiuo addition to Hie city hall, and havo been decided upon with deliberation and In re ponso to a demand whhjji would not rftwn. Tho hotel Is a private enter prise for public uses. Tlic- High uohooi, South Marshfleld school, and city hall are public. Tho hotel is the only one of these Institutions whioh private capital has been subscribed lo build. Only a very fjw pernor, J furnished that. The point is thai tho liberality cf public spirited citizens has not yet Iieon touched and nobody, except the Tiotel subscribers, enn claim to havo Tem affected to tho extent of more than ono hundred dollars for any In stitution, of which MarRhflold can be proud. This Is fortunato r tho lib eral ones aro anxious to contribute to a public library and thoy havo no ifxcuso for not contributing oven if ffioy wnnted to find one, Tho fact that tho Uttlo city of Tillamook has Just established a public library and that most other Orogon cities havo llioiu already In full operation, was a matter of comment yesterday In many places and It is bocomlng ovl rfonC thnt a sentiment is forming In Murshruid which will bo very favora tle to tin library when it Is revived again on tho right lines. Many sub scriptions can bo obtnlnod and tho public entertainments which nro pro 7osed for tho bonoflt of tho book fund will bo eminently successful. Hia library la in sluht. Bee A. H. I Seattle, Wa3h., Oct. 1G. -Seattle police have found more than a score of trunks, gilps and old pieces of baggage concealed In an old barn near Ranler boulevard and Dean btreets, in the southeastern part of the city, and believe they have un earthed a gang of robbing express wagon drivers who have used tho bain as a cache for their plunder. Most of the trunks and grips had been broken into and identification marks changed, but after two hours' work today eight pieces of baggage were identified. Among them were a grip belonging to Arthur Langrish of JJumont, Cai., a grip owned by Miss Mabel Rivers, Fourteenth and Davis streets, Portland, a case of now bopks belonging to Verna Gar ger, of Everelt. Other baggage was identified but the addres3 of tho owners are not known. The discovery of the cache grew out of the arrest of Henry Imholt an expressman who refused to de liver the baggage for Rev. Peter Orloff, priest of an Alaskan Greek church. In searching for the priest's baggage the cache was found in an old barn. SONOM AG" 1RL CHAMPION TROTTER FOR 1007 Lexington, Ky., Oct. 15. Last spring Mr. O'Neill, who lives in the eastern part of town, while planting potatoes in his garden, placed one ' potato about the size of an egg in a hill with, no other seed whatever. This fall he dug from that hill 49 good sized potatoes, the contents of the hill weighing 19 pounds. MAKES DEFENSE e OF PRESERVATIVES Brooklyn Physician Says That Acids Used Decrease Disease. Chicago, Oct. 1G. Dr. Robert G. Eccles of Brooklyn, in aniddress before the American Meat Packers' Association today, declared that "America's hysteria over the use of preservatives in meat would vanish If the people were only as familiar with horlc acid, benzoic acid and salicylic as they are with the use of vinegar and smoke. "Should any one try to get d law passed," he said, "forbidding the use of vinegar or smoke In the cur ing of foods, he would be laughed to scornr And yet no chemist, edu cated vphyslcian or physiologist can deny Uie fact that, dose for dose, the active ingredients of smoke and vinegar are much more dangerous than tho acids named. Vinegar is eight times more potent than any of the preservatives which have come under the ban. "It is really a remarkable fact that whenever a city or state has sought to suppress the use of pre servatives within its borders, deaths from intestinal diseases have gone up with a leap. When Brooklyn tried It her death rate rose, while that of New York, with only a river between, slightly declined." GUGGENHEIM TAKES THE MEN Will Furnish Employment for All Laborers Out of Work at Vnldcz. fleattle, Wash., Oct. 16.
