We have heard of calamity howl
ers before. It Is nothing new for
rlctf men to predict such nonsense as
Mr. Ripley, the president of the San
to Fe railroad, has given to the pub
lic. Should It come to pass that tho
railroads only have one job for each
two men, then tho Oregon farmers
-will have four jobs for each man not
employed by those roads. Let Mr.
Ripley fulfill his prediction; nobody
will be hurt and many benqflted. P.

PROMISE OF HIGH
PRICES FOR WHEAT
Foreign Countries Raised Little
Grain, So Come to America
for Fowl.
Chicago, Oct. 10. Wheat prices
soared yesterday to the great delight
of speculators who were so fortunate
as to be "long" on the market. The
May delivery ascended to $1.09,
the top price touched on the board
of trade this year. The market was
Inflated with bullish cnthusaism gen
erated by advancing prices in foreign
markets and heavy demands from ex
porters, due to a shortage in sup
plies abroad. Bears struggled In
vain to hold prices down and were
finally forced to "pocket" severe
losses. The pit was thrown Into a
feverish state of activity by the wild
scramble to buy.
James A. Patten, once mayor of
Evanston and one of the "big guns"
on the board, Is leader of the hull
movement and his firm did most of
the buying. However, there was
buying by commission houses gener
ally, an unmistakable evidence of
Increased speculative interest.
The bulls declare that the an
ticipated shortage In the world's sup
plies, which sent prices to $1 last
spring, Is tiow being realised. Eu
rope, they declare, will need every
bushel of wheat that this country
has to spare for export. The foreign
ers, they say, will buy regardless of
prices until their wants are satis
fied. E. W. Kalb, a member of the board
who returned today from a six
month's trip abroad, said that while
crops In many parts of Europe had
turned out better than anticipated
last spring, the foreigners are buy
ing supplies wherever they are to be
had.
