Oregon. EQUAL justice. to city council were certainly en- i to much credit for passing tho ordinance although It was slm- an act of necessity and failure jass it would have been worthy evere criticism. But tho firo or- ince, as It is written, was not all t could bo deshed. Exactly why east side of Front street should excepted Is something that some ik and candid member of tho ncll would do well to explain. that any explanation is needed, it would look better. Was it be- se it is so near the water that it ) hoped that water and file be- enemies the former would be aid? et us be serious. Mr. Guslovson an old and lespeeted resident of trshfield. Ho Is just as much cn led to favoiablo consideration and ay privilege as any person in the y. The fire ordinance was not de yned as a direct obstruction to his n to build a framo structuio on corner of C stieet and Broad , but tho singular and Inexpllca cxceplion of tho ea3t sido of out street from tho fire limits, Mild seem to Indicate that boiuo dy was being favored while Mr. .slovsou was being restricted. This not fair. It is unjust. It cannot ) defended. It will not do to say Sit tho city necd3 to build an addi ct to its city hall and that It can y afford to build of wood. If it a't afford to accept tho reason ich actuated tho application of fire jttictions to a privnto citizen, it' n't afford to pass a fire ordinance d might as well consider itself as public pauper at once. If tho city s a right to build a frame struct ,o in what should bo included in the o district, then Mr. Guslovson has right, morally, to build a framo (tiding, too. -It has boon repoited on the street at ono of tho mombers of tho coun l who owns considerable property i Front street, expects to add to one his framo structures. If this city s a right to build Its shanty, tho mbor in question has a right to to his, and ho and Mr. Guslovson tho same list and entitled to ip rights. Of course there Is v eronco so far as tho member of council is concerned. It is un- stood that his plan contemplates third story to his two-story framo. would not bo expected that ho Juld put a brick or concrete third h ... !0ry on tuo two-stoiy irnmo, ot lurse, but then, perhaps it would oe- tr to him that tho addition of a lid Btory need not bo made. fbuld It not bo a good Idea for tho fundi to keep up its i coord by rdng tho moto out of its own eo d tho eyes of Its neighbor, b tending tho rue ouunanco "ono ttlo bit." The congested condition of tho streets on which crowds swarm to and fro add to the probability that It is true. The attendance at school approximates 500 and Is Increasing daily. It is believed that from one to two hundred more will be en rolled within the month. It Is well Vnnwn tlmt there are hundreds of young men here without their fami lies and that the single men who have come in to work in the mills or on constructlonwork, number man more. In 0e cho1 attendance in a c'sftcrhas doubled its popu lation in eighteen months as Marsh field has done, should be multiplied by ten In order to get the population and will give, at leabt, 5,009. Take tho Smith mill, for Instance. It is a known fact that some twenty men are employed there whose families aro coming as soon as it may be pos sible to get homes. The same fea ture affects nearly all departments, 2nd if all new-comers bring their tnmilies and tho joung men get married, Marshfield's population will not fall short of 7,000 without estl mntlnii any future growth beyond that. But It Is discrediting Coos Bay and belittling the divinity of its great destiny to understato so plain a fact. Tho same thing may be said of North Bend. It has three thousand people, and ono who enters tho fac tories on Its spacious water front must be Impressed with the truth of the statement. In short, Marshfleld and North Bend consolidated, con tain not less than 8,000 people. Daily Transfers. September 28, 1907. It. L. Edmonston to Benjamin P.
