ALLEGANY NEWS.
The writer saw fit to make a trip
on the west fork last Thursday.
Perhaps Tho Times' readers would
like to know about It.
We were given the slowest farm
horse for tho ride. Wo had scarcely
started when we met Mr. Rodlno and
Mrs. Wltheit. Mrs. WItheit owns a
ranch on Loon lake. She had been
In Marshfleld to have some dental
work done. We also saw Alex Saw
yer and gentleman friend were tak
ing a small drove of horses to the
Umpqua. Mr. Sawyer had visited a
couplo of days with his sister, Mrs.
Bessie Gage.
By the time wo had reached the
Gould logging camp wo considered
ourselves tired and stopped to visit
tho cook, Miss Mary Frier. Miss
Frier had gone on a shopping expe
dition to Marshfleld and Mrs. Bessie
Gage was making dishes sing.
After riding about a mile farther
we met Mr. Rhoades, who was limp
ing along. Upon Inquiry we learned
that Mr. Rhoades and his team came
to some disagreement about hauling
a load over tho Devil's Elbow. In a
narrow place In tho road the team be
gan backing against a perpendicular
bank, turning the wagon over and
down the grade. Mr. Rhoades was
found lying on a rock with a wagon
wheel resting on one leg. One horse
had his head under his body and he
was on his back. The other came
near choking. Fortunately neither
man nor beast was much Injured.
At Tom Parker's ranch Mr. Por
ter and sister Maud were picking ap
ples. They had housed two hundred
and thirty boxes and were not near
tho end of picking. John Porter
started about a week ago for Iowa.
Mr. Bremer is a little ahead, hav
ing his potatoes all dug and nearly
through apple picking. He has taken
the contract to pack apples for F. S.
Dow on West Fork.
Mr. Fotten and family who moved
on a ranch at tho end of the county
road, arc making a very comfortable
homo among tho alders. They are
starting a thoroughbred poultry
ranch. Their chickens arc brown
leghorns.
Mr. Pigeon, a new comer, has a
Rhode Island Red poultry ranch.
We had some experience trying to
manipulate the ferry near the Bre
mer ranch. The ferry is a scow fast
ened to a cable and worked by ropes.
We tried pulling one wet rope after
another. The very last one was the
one that helped us across.
John Michelbrlnk and wife were
visiting Mr. Michclbrank's mother,
Mrs. Bremer, for a week. They also
visited Mr. F. Noah's family.
Mr. Soules was among the apple
pickers. They are agreeable people
, to visit with.
I Mr. Thurman of Loon lake, son
'Clarence and Willie Judy, drove a
nice herd of swine from tho lake
Monday.
I A largo engine came up last
'week for one of the logging camps
i and began the trip over the moun
tains Monday.
Mrs. Thurman is visiting her sis
ter, Mrs. Thomas, and other friends
for a few weeks.
