TAFT FOR PRESIDENT.
Tho presidential election of next
year Is already p'tating tho Ameri
can people nnd tho star actors on
tho political stage at presont are
William H. Taft, some time Gov
ernor of the Philippine Islands and
now Secretary of War in President
Roosevelt's cabinet, and W. J.
Bryan, leader of tho Democratic
party, and twice candidate for Frest
dent. These gentlemen aro now be
ing kept by tho politicians and news
papors In the public eye, and all
sorts of political sentiment, passion,
prejudices and self-interests, are be
ing invoked in favor of ono or the
other candidate.
It is over a year to tho next elec
tion for President. It is nino months
of tho situation propose that the pro
tection is needed on the Marshfleld
side and not beyond? Since it seems
necessary that the most prominent
and conspicuous placo on the water
front should bo devoted to pit fills
and folly, and that the city should
thus prominently wear tho scarlet
letter, it is suggested that the rails
be placed so one going from the city's
hall to the city's fall, will not be in
danger of walking Into the bay. If
he succeedsMn getting by he is proba
bly safe and doesn't need the rails.
Notice.
To our patrons, commencing
the first of October, 1907, all laun
dry work will bo placed on a cash
basis. Thanking you for past busi
ness and soliciting continuance of
the same. Signed.

CROESUS OF THE FUTURE
WILSON SAYS HE AVILL OWN
Ono Man Already Controls 30,000,
000 Acres Rockefeller nnd Car
negie's Wealth Combined.
Washington, Sept. 9. "Nearly all
the timber in tho United States out
side the National forests will, within
a few years, bo exhausted, with the
oxceptipn of vast tracts in tho hands
of one or two men, and each of these
men will have greater wealth than
Rockefeller and Carnegie put to
gether." This remarkable statement was not
made by some theorist or alarmist,
but came from James Wilson, Secre
tary of Agriculture, upon his return
to Washington after a tour of inspec
tion of the National forests of tho
West. And Mr. Wilson is not in
clined to be sensational.
"Rockefeller is now considered tho
modern Croesus," added the Secre
tary, "but the lumber king of tho fu
ture will far surpass him in riches.
And why not? Tho forests of tho
West, through fires and the Inroads
to tho probable dato of tho nominat
ing conventions. Jinny changes may of lumbermen, are disappearing year
occur before either date and neither by year muqh more rapidly than
candldatp may be accepted as tho , they aro growing. In tho far North
flnal choice of his party. Tho great ' west tho big trees are constantly be-
question before tho American people
should ho one 'of measures more
than one of men and each locality
should have tho business senso to
advocate tho candidato most likely
to advanco its own interests, provid
ed the safety of tho nation is not In
volved. So far as present conditions
aro concerned, howovcr, there Is no
danger from either party or any
caudidato now mentioned, to the re
public. Thero are no questions or
Issues involved except business and
moroj questions of a domestic na
ture: Neither Taft, nor Bryan, Fair- i
banks nor Folk, Hughes nor lloko I
Smith aro likely to prove very radi-I
cal. But tho Interests of tho Pacific '
Caaat demand certain business
mea3uros and policies which should
cause Its entire population to vote
practically as ono mnu. )
The most Important consideration
lav tills coast Is tho Panama canal.
Tho Puciflc corist needs this great '
waterway and should favor tho man '
whoso record is most pronounced in )
Us favor. Tho Puciflc coast needs to
luivo its long shoro lino properly pro
tected and Improved, and recognizes
that its best Interests In that respect
would bo subserved only by one who
lias been practically connected with
Oriental questions. Tho Pacific
coast needs tho guiding hand of ono
who lias boon brought In closo con
tact with naval, war nnd murine af
fairs connected with tho Pacific. It
also needs that shipping should bo
fostered and would hove no business
ubjcctlon to giving oncouragomont
to those who will add prestige to
Hi is section by advancing measures in
that direction. Tho coast in .com
mon with most of tho people of tho
United Stntcs, wlillo it Is not in
clined to surrender tho principle of
protection to American industries,
especially ns it is confronted by tho
cheap labor of tho Orient and devel
oping competition in that quarter,
bclioves In a revision of tho tariff
but bulioves tiint revision should bo
mndo by tho friends of protection.
At presont If seoms boyond contro
versy thut W. H. Taft, is, by virtuo of
bis associations, his cxporlonco, his
Juiowledgo of this const and Oriental
questions, as a mutter of good busi
ness selection, tho most sultnblo
standard bearer of tho Republican
party, and tho ono most likoly to ad
vance tho interests of this coast with
out being unfair to any other section.
Let us accept Taft, not monioly us tho
administrator of tho Roosvolt policy,
but as tho candidato who bett under
stands this coast.

"b utaiiujcu, uiiu il mites ouu years
to grow now ones. Thus many gen
erations of men must come and go
beforo wo can replenish the virgin
forests of a few years ago. During
the past few years the price of lum
ber has doubled. With an increased
scarcity thero must still bo higher
price.
"One man in tho Pacific Northwest
already controls 30,000,000 acres of
forest land. Wo have only five times
that amount under control of the
Government. We hold our supply to
protect tho watershed and to pre
serve a supply of timber for future
use. He holds his for profit. In a
quarter of a century from now, when
the supply of timber Is almost gone
and the demand for It has greatly in
creased, think of what those 30,000,
000 acres, and perhaps more than
that may be added to them, will bo
worth."
