Mrs. SacchI and son returned yes terday from a week's outing at Five Mile. Miss Alda Rolley, of Aberdeen, Wash., Is In Marshfleld for a few days on business. Born On Friday, September 6, 1907, to the wife of J. D. McNeil, a daughter. Miss Alice Rowlands, of St. Paul, Is in this city visiting with relatives and friends. Mr. Henry Minert, of San Fran cisco, is visiting in this city as the Sliest of Mr. Earl Savage. Mr. and Mrs. Archlo Kruso left this city yesterday for Bandon, where they4 will permanently locate. Messrs. Earl Savage and Henry Mlner't are spending a few days at Beaver Hill, the guests of Mr C. I. Neff. Mrs. Gettlns left this city yester day for a couple of months' visit with relatives and friends at Rose burg. Mr. Geo. Erlckson returned Thurs day from a week's outing up Coos River, where ho was the guest at "The Orchard." H. Kynell, an employe of the C. A. Smith Lumber and Manufacturing Company, is building a residence in East Marshfleld. C. G. Getty, of Empire, has placed an order with the Smith company for lumber with which to build a resi dence in Empire. Ed. Horn, of North Bend, is build ing a fine, eight room residence in Bangor. It will be completed in -about three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Janelle, of Gardiner, aro here for a few days. Mrs. Janelle came to attend the Modern Com pany's millinery opening. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Kaldwall, of Minneapolis, aro on the Bay looking over the country. It Is probable they will remain throughout the winter. Mr. Guy Bennett, of Gilroy, Texas, is in this city for a few days. From Marshfleld he will go to Bandon for a short outing and from there on down the coast. Messrs. Rush, White, McCullough and Savage, leave tomorow for Myr tle Point, where, they will lay In sup plies for an extended hunting trip through the mountains surrounding that vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. S. I. Orlnhelmer, of Sau Francisco, are on the Bay look ing over the country and the business opportunities offered hero. If satis factory they will remain for the win ter. Jack Flanagan is having lumber taken to his country home at Plat B for the purposo of building a stable for his thoroughbred horse which he purchased on his recent hunting trip to Curry county. Mr. B. D. Batterson, of Billings, Mont., arrived yesterday In the city. He reports hearing the "Call of Coos Bay" so often that at last he deter mined to see for himself. Cotton, of Seattle, is In town looking around and is well pleased with country and climate. The Norway school closed for a month's vacation, then tho winter term will begin. Bert Hollenbeck was breaking a colt last week and managed to get his knee dislocated In tho operation. At George Herman's logging camp near Dora, 11G logs were gotten out in one day which scaled 80,000 feet. Tho Miss Flora and Mary Quick have returned to Pendleton after visiting friends here about two months. Tho sch6ol at Arago opened last Monday, with the grounds about the school house nicely fixed up. Miss Minnlo McClosky is the teacher. Miss Edith L. Nlles, of Portland, is hero to get advertisements for this part of tho country. Sao thinks our valley very beautiful and rich. The Modern Woodmen of America will give an excursion from Myrtle Point to Bandon on Sunday next. They will go on the steamer Echo. Mr. Thomas Krowson, of Drain, is here and says tho work on the rail road Is not stopped, and will go on, though they can not secure enough men. Mr. Orvil Dodge has leased his paper the Sentinel and will become a full-fledged miner. Messrs. H. J. Crippen & Co. will publish the paper hereafter. Tho steamer Echo, that has run for years on the route between here and Myrtle Point, has been laid off indefinitely. Does not pay, Is the reason given. Imogene Alexen slipped and fell near the Skookum restaurant while carrying a baby and dislocated her arm at the elbow and fractured one of the bones of tho forearm. A logger, Wm. Anderson, was hurt last week at Beaver Hill camp, an ax glanced and entered his foot. He was brought to the city hospital for treatment. It was a very painful wound. As Mrs. George Peoples was re-J turning homo from town today, in some manner upset her buggy and herself and child were thrown on-., tho latter's wrist or arm was broken. Full particulars hpvo not yet been received. United States Congressman Haw ley, of Oregon, from the first district was in tho city today shaking hands with friends. He is on his way to Curry county and when he returns in a short time will address the peo ple here. J. B. Moomau, the proprietor of the Arago hop field, is here looking for a residence for his family, where the children can attend school, he has a position on the L. L. & T. R. R. at Lamoine, Cal. to which he will return. "The Coos Coutny" hop yard, at Arago will be ready to be harvested the flrst of next week. They aro In prime condition, no lice or mold, very little foliage, and large and heavy. They have a nice place for pickers to camp. Three thousand sheep were driven out over the stage road to Oakland, Cal., last week, the majority came from Curry county. Walker and Knight were the drovers. The sheep brought from ?2.75 to $4.00 per head. F. A. Bates formerly of Coqullle River and who is a civil engineer and expert miner is engaged .in a large mining enterprise In Columbia, South America. He is tho only white man In the locality. His wife is in the east visiting while a son and daughter reside here. Mrs. Hastings, an old settler, who has lived on Cunningham creek a good many years, died this, Wednes day, morning at tho Northwestern Hospital. She suffered some time with cancer. Her husband preceeded her to the better world a few years ago. She will be buried today; fun eral at the Presbyterian church, con ducted by Rev. B. B. Paull. Hon. Judge Sperry and J. M. Nye were both absent, but it was rGported that ho had never witnessed a -base ball game In his life, and as great in dignation prevailed about it A. S. Hammond nlade a motion that ho be disfranchised, which was seconded by A. J. Sherwood, and carried, and the papers will be legally made out and presented to the Judge. The" speeches were all Interesting. J. W. Lenevo said his Ideas of a "good game" were perhaps different than some others, that though tho score might bo 10 to 12 or there-a-bouts and be a very Interesting game, and everybody playing ball, and cited the last game played here with North Bend, when Paull, fielder of the North Bend team, and brother of one ot the Coqullle team, was bo inter ested In the business of getting a fly that he went backwardB Into a 10 foot ditch, that was such playing as he called good, and there wore a few of thoso games played this year, and he would put the Coqullle homo talent team against any like team In the state. The business men of this city gave their victorious baso ball team a banquet last night at the Tupper Houso. Between thirty and forty gentlemen dined sumptuously from tho tables spread with all tho usual luxuries, and a pleasant evening was enjoyed. The following program was rendered, called the "Champion's Banquet." Note Gentlemen will not he re-julred to wear masks. Af ter tho feed A. J. Sherwood will glvo us "A send off" to which "Pauly" will reply. Following this Judge Sherry will tell us "What I know About Base Ball." When you have recovered from this the Mayor will tell us "How to Make a Hit," which will bo followed by a discourse by Lon Hazard, on "Easy Money." If there Is any one left in the hall after this Hon. Jim Watson will speak on "High Balls and Other Balls," after which you will feel relieved to hear W. T. Sweeny left this morn ing for Coqullle, enrouto to Port land. Miss Garfield and Mrs. Geo. P. L'aird left yesterday for a short visit on tho Bay. The schooner C. T. Hill left for San Francisco today with a full cargo of lumber from the Prosper Mill. Invitations are out for tho wedding of Earnest Boak and Miss Kate Mc Nair,.to occur on the eleventh. ' Mrs. C. Timmons and daughter Ethel arrived from Astoria today to remain with Mr. Timmons during the fishing season here. A. B. Robinson, representing tho Bowman Cigar Co., of this place, Is circulating in Myrtle Point, Coqullle and the Bay cities this week. John Marsden has- posted notice of intention to apply for a liquor license in the town of Bandon and is having the old Ponter store fitted up for a saloon, ' Rube Gardner, Harry Walker, Mrs. C. E. Hollopeter and G. T. Treadgold all of Bandon, filed on government lands before County Clerk Watson yesterday. J. Van Norden, of Portland, is In Bandon looking over the ground with a view to opening up a jewelry store and watch making establishment. He is accompanied by his wife. Congressman W. C. Hawley passed through town yesterday Into Curry County. He will stop on the way back when a meeting of the faithful will welcome him to Bandon. Mrs. Steele was in town yesterday and completed arrangements to move to Coqullle, whose sunny slopes agree better with Doctor Steel's health than Bandon's gentle zephyrs. The doctor's, condition is much im proved. School commenced today with an unprecedented attendance; seven teachers under the superlntendency of Prof. H. C. Ostein, constitute the faculty. They are the Misses Yoe, Collier, Rodlno, Murphy and Logan. Considerable trouble and confusion has been caused by an inadequacy of text books, which cannot be reme died until the arrival of the Str.
