Miss Alpha Mnuzey left yesterday for Portland to visit with friends In that city Ralph White, of Chicago, 111., Is In the city visiting with friends and relatives. Miss nieanor Helm, Is visiting Mrs. A. E. Seaman, of Coos Iliver, for a few day3. Miss Peel: has accepted the posi tion of stenographer for the Cham ber of Commerce. Miss Marjory Cowan is visiting up Coos River as tho guest of Miss Helen Landreth. Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Flcht left this city by Roseburg last night for their homo in southern Idaho. Mrs. M. J. Blake and Mrs. Mc Farland returned from their sum mer home on Coos River yesterday. Miss Maggie Murphy has accepted the position as teacher of the fifth and sixth grades In Bandon public school. Mr Clarence Gould, of "Elk Horn Ranch," was in tho city yesteray. While here Mr. Gould secured a new logging engine for his camp. The Ladies' Art club will not meet until the second Friday in Sept. At that time they will meet at tho resl- dncce of Mrs J. W. Snover. Mis. Naglo departed last evening for her home In Pendleton after i3ltlng a short time as tho guest of Mrs. R. A. Copple of this city. Misses Elsie Durham and Agnes Neus passed through Marshfleld yes terday on their way to Bandon where they will remain for a few days' out ing. Miss Grayice Gould passed through this city yesterday on her way to Coqullle where she will remain for a short time as tho guest or Mrs. Levi Smith, of that city.' Mr. Edgar Campbell left this city yesterday for Riverside, Cal. Ho will bo gone a short time and upon his return will resume his position at Magnos and Matson's. Miss Laura Rivers, of San Fran cisco, arrived on tho Bay yesterday and will remain for an Indefinite period. During tho time she will visit with relatives at Bandon and Coqullle. The lumber for the homo of Mrs. Geo. Adams was taken up Coos River yesterday. Building on the residence will begin Immediately and when completed Mrs. Adams will reside there. I. S. Kauffman returned yester day from an outing on Coos Rlvor for several days. Ho doesn't report bagging any big game, but declares he caught some fish. Frank W. Almond left on tho Breakwater for Boise, Idaho. Ho will attend university this winter, re turning to Coos Bay In the spring. He Is greatly enamored with this country. Ho bought property in North Bond before leaving. Messrs. Walter Wood and H. B. Gregg arrived yesterday from San Francisco for an extended outing and hunting trip. Mr. Wood is a member of the E. K. Wood Lumber Company of San Francisco, and Mr. Gregg Is connected with tho Matson Naviga tion Company. E. C. Mathers, bookkeeper for the Coos Bay Grocery Co., at North Bend, returned Wednesday from Curry county, where ho had been visiting for several days. While ab sent ho took In the races at Wed derburn. Assistant Secretary Mosessohn, of tho Chamber of Commerce, received an inquiry from Oakland, Cal., yes terday, In regard to tho climatic ef fect on newly applied paint. Tho writer spoko of manufacturing ,an article that would have to bo paint ed the evening beforo its exposure for sale, and ho desired to have tho paint dry forthwith. Ho was Informed that paint drys a3 quickly in Portland as in California, notwithstanding tho fact that wo have more rain hero than in that frequently drouth-strlck-on state. Another Inquiry was received from a boat builder in Michigan, who thinks of locating in Portland and following his occupation here. He was told that both Joseph Paquet and Joseph Supple, two boat builders of Portland, hed gotten rich and were now In possesion of valuable property in the city as a result of strict atten tion to business, and that the In quirer could probably do as well should he conclude to drive his stakes here. Secretary Laber, of the Board of Trade, received an Inquiry yesterday from Ole Peterson, a resident of Wisconsin, asking if tho sum of $10,000 could bo profitably Invested In the fishing business by two men who wero not afraid of work. He was told that money was being made In that business In Oregon, and that ho should come right along and bring his partner with him. GAMBLER KILLS MAN IN SHANIKO HOTEL Slieephcrder Shot Down Without Provocation By Intoxi cated Sport. The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 27. A tele phone message from Shanlko to tho district attorney of this city gives a meager account of the killing of Tom McConnelly by Thomas Hale, a gambler, this morning, at 12:30 o'clock. Hale came into the Co lumbia Southern Hotol bar somewhat mioxicatea, anu nounsneu a pistol in i a threatening manner. Tho bar tender became alarmed and went out to call the Marshal. Two men, pass ing the saloon at this Juncture, heard Hale say to McConnelly, "I won't hurt you, I have nothing against you." Soon afterwards they heard three shots fired, and entering tho saloon found McConnelly dead, hav ing been shot three times. The smoking revolver was in Halo's hands. McConnelly was a sheepherder working for the B., S. & L. Co., for some time. Hale Is a well-known gambler, and Is considered a desper ate character. A Coroner's inquest was held this morning.
