in no part of America is good land
worthless, as it ay as formerly sup
posed to be. To the New Englander
who has felt the necessity of aband
oning his sterile fnrm and seeking
new and virgin fields, it seems sur
prising, that in the far west, land
can bo considered worth more than
it Is in thickly settled New England.

First National 13nnk of Coos Day at
Marshfield, which is published in this
issuo of the Times. The statement
shows the condition of the bank at
tho closo of business August 22nd,
and among other Items it appears
that it has gained In deposits sinco

May 20th, 1907, over ?G0,000. It
.also shows a very handsome reserve

jucutory on Its careful and conservative-

Ex-Governor Taylor of Kentucky,
now and ever since his departure
from his native state a resident of
Indianapolis, Indiana, has offered to
return' to Kentucky for trial if he
can be guaranteed certain protection
and a fair trial. The terms imposed
by him are not unjust but consider
ing the prejudices existing in Ken
tucky, are impossible. Evidently the
Ex-Governor has no intention of re
turning. But he has put the propo
sition up to Kentucky to show
whether it can guarantee fairness.
A new explosive has been invented
and the United States has the secret
of it. This is good news. England,
Germany and France have had their
secret explosives In order and Japan
had 'hei-3 in time to beat Russia. Now
the United States is entitled to her
turn. It is said that Dunnite the
American article is more destructive
than any explosive to date that that
a, Dunnite shell dropped Into a bat
tleship 'would sink that ship at once.

liam S. Taylor, ex-governor of Ken
tucky, whose extradition has been
sought by that state since the as
sassination of Governor Gocbel seven
years irgo, last night gave out a
signed statement offering to return
to Kentucky to stand trial himself
and to testify In the Caleb Powers
case, if he can bo assured absolutely
of fair treatment. In his statement
Mr. Taylor says:
"If Commonwealth Attorney Rob
ert B. Franklin has power to promise
immunity, will cause what remains of
the $100,000 corruption fund to be
returned to the treasury of Ken
tucky, no part of It to be used in
these prosecutions, thus putting my
case on the same footing as other
criminal cases, "will guarantee that
all trial juries in my case shall be
composed of six upright Democrats
and a like number of upright Repub
licans, will guarantee that bail will
be granted me within the limits of
$100,000, will dismiss the indict
ments against all parties used as
prosecuting witnesses except myself,
leaving them free to testify without
fear, coercion or restraint, and, last
but by no means least, will in ad
vance, by mutual agreement, select
an able, upright and impartial judge
to try my case, I will without any
promise of immunity, voluntarily and
gladly return to Kentucky, not only
to testify In the Powers case, but to
submit myseff to trial before a jury
of my native state."
