embraces and soon destroys. For
the sake of the little children, at
least, if for no other reason, this
curse should not occupy the most
conspicuous place In Marshfleld.
Where then shall it be located? The
question Is Insulting. Neither the
paper, nor the authorities, nor the
people care to extend patronage so
far as to aid In the selection of a lo
cation. We do not even help our
business men who pursue the most
legitimate lines to find a place. How
much less then should honest people
be expected to select the place on
which a curse must rest. It must
find its own place of least resistance,
out not on the water front nor in the
high places.
Business Directory
GKTTIXG IX AM) OUT.
The communication of Mr. Eddy
in another column of the paper does
not show the best way into the Coos
Bay country, but it does show that
tho thousands of acres valued now
at very near a million dollars, which
were transferred to pay for a good
wagon road, did not accomplish much
in that direction. But let us say to
Mr. Eddy that the road from Rose
burg to C003 Bay Is not the only
road. There are others. Let us also
say to him that we are not boasting
too much nor with a choking feeling
of pride when we assort that tho
Drain road Is a better one. It is,
however. In case he goe3 out which
we ljope so good a citizen wont think
of doing let him take a pleasant
launch ride the length of the bay
and then a stage ride the length of
a delightfully picturesque beach,
over which the surf rolls playfully
around the horses feet. Let him en
joy the steamboat ride to Gardiner
the little white city, where he may
stop at a neat hotel. Then let him
steam up tho Umpqua to Scottsburg
and there stop over night and In the
morning go by stage to Drain. 'We
assure him that at Elkton on the
Drain stage road he will be able to
get a famous meal and It will com
pensate him for iho rigors of the
stage ride. But there aro other ways
also to go to Portland or San Fran
cisco from iilurshlleld. Tho ocean
trip is one which can be mado as
easily from Coos Bay as from any
other place and if ho likes the sea
and lt3 voyaging he will find it bet
ter than the stage road. Most peo
ple who come into C003 Bay love to
stay here. Having arrived they do
not wish to depart. The climate, the
scenery, the people and the prospects
aro fluctuating.
While these methods of transpor
tation are not ideal they lead to an
Ideal country. The thousands of
people who have come in hero and
tho large volume of business done
prqve tho richness of tho country.
Tho proof of the pudding Is in tho
eating and. we who have eaten stay
to eat longer rtnd to eat more. Still
there Is a solution of this railroad
question, too. Somebody said that
tho people of Coos Bay had long
been waiting for a railroad to "break
In." If they keep coming and stay
ing and prospering as they seoln to be
dolns now, they wont wait for a
railroad to "break in" but will build
d railroad and "break out." Tho
Uoseburg-Coos Bay line was to bo
a "break out" railroad but it passed
into the "break In" list and broke
bofoie It began. Wo might assure
Mr. Eddy and wo think ho is ready
tJ agree to tho proposition that
while Coos Bay needs a railroad,
she does not need it half so much as
tho outsido world needs one to her.
Sho can become a city of 15,000 peo
plo on her own resources if sao never
gets a railroad. But tho evidences
aro very satisfactory that railroads
aro on tho way. There aro 200 men
at work on tho Drain road and great
stores of material at Drain and
Gardiner for building It. It may
take two years, but it may also take
less than two years to bring It into
Coos Bay. There Is good reason to
boliovo that If Coos Bay people would
organize and obtain rights of way for
a Btcam railroad to connect with tho
Northwestern that tho Vanderbllt
lines would also como In within tho
tlmu it takes the Drain road to como
In. In other words tho Northwestern
could bo used as a "break out" road
because It could ho commenced nt
this end with ample help from tho
stockholders of that company. There
Is reason to expect that tho Hill in
terests will speed in this direction
heforo long. So Coos Bay peoplo can
bo happy and they aro.
COOS HAY'S MUCK.
The people of Coos Bay have rea
son to congratulate themselves on
the success which has attended the
operations of the Utter Brick com
pany in making brick from Coos Bay
clays. It has been frequently as
serted that good brick can not bo
made here and consequently the
buildings nave been tnus lar con
structed of wood. Result very high
rates of Insurance. Now the case Is
different. The largo buildings going
up may be assured that good brick
home-made and at a reasonable price
will bo available. This is regard
ed as a fortunate discovery by many
of the people who have been familiar
with the failures heretofore scored
In this line. But the fact Is now
plain enough that It was not the
clays which were at fault, but the
machinery and the process. Even
good brick makers can not make
good bricks without the tools. The
addition to the list of Coos Bay's re
sources of good brick clays means
the Very pronounced enhancement of
Coos Bay's wealth. It can not be
over estimated.

The "Gnbler Tone" has been famous Milting piano users for more thnn

(Etieone Guard.)
Senator Fulton declares ho will
work to secure the opening of the
Willamette river by federal appro
priation from Eugene to the Colum
bia. He thinks this improvement
entirely feasible and supplemented
by free locks at Oregon City would
prove a boon to the Willamette val
ley. Senator Fulton Is right and his
efforts should be appreciated and en
dorsed by the Commercial Club and
Merchants' Protective Association of
this city. With river steamers and
barges plying on the upper Willam
ette as far as Eugene, there would be
no need to-further agitate the rail
road rate question, or discuss the
car shortage problem. The present
unsatisfactory transportation condi
tions would be abolished forever.
With tho aid of our delegation in
congress It will only be a rratter of
time when congress must recognize
our right to substantial recognition
and assistance, and wo can hasten
that-'time by actively taking up tho
work.
Lot our commercial bodies appoint

Senator Fulton and his colleagues.
