J.-J ', 1 1 BAY'S FIE TRAVELS EN Ohioan Now Living In Marsh field Writes Interesting Descriptive Epistle. TELLS OF POSSIBILITIES Is Convinced That Unequalled Op portunities Are Awaiting 1 1 Seekers on the Const. Dack In Bowling Green, Ohio, the fame of Cooa Bay has travelled helped materially by a front page artlclo In tho Dally Herald, of that city, as follows: "Tho following Interesting letter has been received by Mrs. Emma Cooley from her son-ln-Iaw, Charles A. Howard, who Is located In Marsh field, Oregon: " 'Dear Mother: A good long tlmo ago, I promised you that I would glvo you my Impressions of thi3 country, or rather what I have seen of it, but tho longer I put it off, the more I learned, and now I find that I cannot come anywhere near doing tho Bubject justice. While- I have only been In this part of the country three months, Its possibilities and advantages, I can see ut a glance. " 'Geographically, Coos Bay stands at tho head of all tho Coast Ports on tho whole western coast, being some COO miles nearer the Orient than "either San Francisco, Seattle or Port land. And as the principal e.xpoit productions are flour and lumber COO miles and a good safe liaibor add materially to its advantages. And besides we now have tho largest lumber mill on the coast, and when all Its machinery Is In, and the plant complete, It will bo one of tho larg est and best equipped mills in tho world. The owner, Mr. C. A. Smith, is perhaps tho best known lumber producer, in this country, having for years a very large percentage of tho Minnesota and Wisconsin lumber business In his control, and now that that country has been pretty thor oughly cut over, ho Is transferring all of his vast interests and influence here. That is only one thing. Coos Bay and Coos county, would bo great If there wasn't a Smith in it. And at that It needs just such men. Ev ery day we havo some Smiths, but not perhaps of tho samo name, com ing to see tho greatness and won ders of Coos Bay and county. They are not all interested In the lumber business either, for that is not tho only resource we have here. You can hardly mention or think of any thing, but what wo havo or could produce. While we have no farming, such as there is in good old Wood county, yet everyone who has a piece of ground, which wo used to call farms (they call them ranches here, makes a good living, and in most cases they can and do, lay aside a snug sum every year. The principal thing In this -lino Is dairying. Thero are three largo creameries here on tho Bay, besides several more throughout tho country. The rancher delivers his milk to a certain point, and collectors gather It up. It is mostly dono by boats, as there are very few roads in this country yet, and In fact, most If not all of the agricultural and commercial business is handled in that way, for there aro numerous creeks, small rivers and sloughs, extending In overy direc tions, and all have their outlets In navigable water where they can bo marketed. While It is an old settled county, yet It Is only In Its Infnncy n to dovolopmonts. The coal alonu would bo enough to make it inde pendent, but that is now considered of minor importance. Tho fruit would make It rich, but that Is also noglected. Tho hills and mountains contain mineral and ore of all kinds, am) yet you might say they arfa vir gins. In fact, the people, who first inhabited this country, found It so easy to make a living that they were content to let damo nature provide. So suio were they that each day would look out for tho next, that thoy did not worry themselves, but simply basked In tho sunshine and smiles which a 'great and kind Provl donco had provided for them. And so it has continued for the last forty years. "To show you how the old settlers feol about this, country, I will tell you an answer I got from one of them the other day, as I was trying to gather somo Information. I asked an old timer If ho had lived In this country all of his life, ho said, "No, not yet, but I excopt to," and so it is. But every day brings its changes. Eastern people who have grown tired of their cramped and crowded quar ters, are coming hero by every boat. Capitalists, who are looking for good safo investments aro here, and more coming. Laboring men who" find their occupation no longer enough, to sustain them In the overworked and crowded East; tradesmen, me chanics, professional and business men of all kinds are facing the west, whero thero is such a vastness and so much grandeur. So much of everything that after they are once here, and become accustomed to its gioatness, thoy wonder how they ever lived so long away from It. Of course we have the malcontents, who would not be satisfied if they were sitting at the right hand of Saint Peter. For those I can say the West can get along without them, but for the homeseeker, tho machinist, the merchant, the professional or the capitalist, I can say come west, learn of tho greatness, taste of Its good ness and live In its wonderfulness. In saying this I am speaking of the whole western coast. This country hab lain dormant, while the East has been going ahead in leaps and bounds, but it could not remain so, for soon wise men who came out here jears ago saw and Invested, and from a very small outlay have lived to see it expand and grow, until today they aro independent, and in fact rich, rich In so far that they have lived in this glorious climate, whero It never gets colder than 40 above, or warmer than 83, whero overy night in tho year you can sleep witli a good heavy blanket over you, whero you can eat strawberries and small garden stuff out of your own garden eight months in the year, where roses and other flowers bloom the year around, where malignant and contagious diseases cannot get a foothold. Is It not enough to live In such a country? I think so, and If I could havo my way, I would say to all my friends, come West, if not tp C003 Bay, come West anytfayv It Is all good. In writing this I have only tried to express how this country Impres Flanagan & Bennett Bank MARSHFIELB. OREGON.
