STEAM FOR MOTIVE POWER Estimated Cost of Construction Is $225,000 For Every Mllo ltuilt. Corvallis, Ore., July 20. It Is given out here that 25 miles of a railroad running from Corvallis southwest along the foothills is to be built this autumn, work to begin as soon as the surveys can bo com pleted and right-of-way secured. The initial shipment of steel rails, comprising four cars, is now In tran sit to Corvallis over the West Side line of the Southern Pacific. An ad ditional six cars arc in Portland, and in all 15 miles of the rails are en route. Surveyors havo been in the field four weeks, and are now oper ating near Corvallis. Tho destination of the lino is Blachley, in what is known as the Lake Creek country, on tho headwa ters of the Siuslaw. The road will bo 38 miles long, and the announce ment is that it will bo complotcd next spring It taps 3,000,000,000 feet of standing timber en route, and traverses the finest agricultural section of Benton county. In the Lake Creek country it opens the finest dairy region along the coast. Stephen Carver, who built the 1G mllo railroad from Ontario to Vale, Is in the enterprise. Corvallis and vicinity subscribed $30,000 In stock. Tho estimated cost of tho first 25 miles, or that section stretching from Corvallis to the head of the Alsca river, is $225,000, or $9,000 a mile. Tho road is to be standard' girage", and for the present will bo of steam motive power. The country through which tho road is to pass is very level, making construction compara tively Inexpensive. Tho negotiations between Mr. Car ver and the Corvallis Commercial Club, through which tho stock was sold, have been carried on with the utmost secrecy, and it was not until today that tho facts were glvon out. Tho offer of Mr. Carver was made to the club a week ago, and after six days' work the committee from the club reported last Saturday night that the stock had been subscribed. Tho road to bo known as the Cor vallis & Alsea IUvor Railway will run south from Corvallis, skirting the foothills, through Bellfountaln, thence southerly, touching the head waters of tho Alsea and on to Blach ley.
