received a potato digger Saturday,
with which they will make quick
work with their "spud" diggin'.
Robert and Jay Richards made a
flying visit to Coos City Sunday to
see their old friend Judge D. L.
Watson.
Mrs. S. H. Black was visiting her
son, Frank and family Friday and
Saturday.
A lteter has been received from J.
S. Masters from Ketchikan, Alaska,
where he arrived July 9 th. He is on
a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Chas.
Buchanan. They, together with
Chas. Buchanan, intend going into
the mountains on a prospecting and
hunting expedition to bo gone sev
eral months.

The steamer Plant arrived in from
San Francisco yesterday afternoon,
out from the Bay city since Satur
day night. She carried a good pns
senger list and 3C0 tons of freight.
Purser Kohoe says they sighted the
schoner San Pedro, which yesterday
morning's dispatches told of being
In collision with the Columbia, In
tow behind the George W. Elder.
The San Pedro had a bad list and
the bow was stove In.
There were several ships in the
vicinity, among them .being the
Roanoke, North Fork and Norwood.
The Plant was not near enough to
speak any of the vessels, and so
learned nothing of the disastrous
wreck until the ship reached Empire
yesterday.
The Plant passed the San Pedro
near Point Gordo, about seven mlle3
below Cape Mendocino. The Elder
and Its tow were headed for Eureka.

& Manufacturing Company, capitali

L. E. Miner, of Minneapolis, and J.
E. Oren, of Marshfleld. The spcond
Is the Smith-Powers Logging Com
pany; capitalization, $150,000; in
corporators, C. A. Smith, A. II. Pow
er and C. L. Trabert. The third is
the Inter-Ocean Transportation Com
pany, capitalized at $300,000. Tho
incorporators of this concern are
headed by C. A. Smith, but the list
could not be learned.

Its mission is to furnish logs for the
Smith mills. Mr. Powers has two
camps in, operation; one, employing
0 men, on Cunningham creek; tho
other, employing 25 men, on South
InlPt The third ramp is being es
tablished on Houghton creek, a
branch of the North Coai river. Mr.
Powers Is from Minneapolis, though
he claims his resldonco at Powers,
another Minnesota city, where he has
spent much of his life.
